Im now on this tank on my way towards the T30.
From what I understand WG pretty much tought up this tank. I guess they came up with a balanced mix, just not the flavour that everyone likes when grinding this TD line. When going over its stats I knew it was going to be slow, but with good armor, and a good gun. The reality is that the turret aside from the mantlet is easily penned, and this tank seems to take brutal damage from arty fire. Good thing is that many players dont seem to know about the weaker turret armor.
The gun is sweet however and the turret gives you nice gun depression. Its pretty much the gun from the current T34, I guess. Interesting fact: The T28's 120mm has better penetration that any german heavy gun.
I have a huge dislike against tanks this slow however as I want to be able to switch positions and this machine cant do that. Im getting the T30 asap.

This tank has no camo value whatsoever
Sorry but that is just plainly untrue. I've had heavies almost drive into me without seeing me, even when I fired on them. Due to the fact this TD has a turret it has more chance of staying hidden as it's hull does not need to move.

Terrible tank. Arty target = no roof + extremely slow = lol 1 shot or 2 in best case.
Turret armor? t29 has more bounces. Turret = 100% pen even from T7 mediums.
This tank is worse Than T28 in all aspects.

I'd simply change my flawed tactic if I were you, if you use it as an assault TD, sure you only get off 1 or 2 shots. However if you use it as a defensive sniper the way it is supposed to be played you'll get off far more. The T28 is not a fast TD so the speed in itself dictates the playstyle. Slow tank = second line tank.

I read the posts here and honestly i dont know what some of You expect from this tank. So far i played few battles in it and its absolutly amazing tank. To be honest i had all the gear (not tracks OFC )unlocked from other line so i started to play it fully upgraded. And today:
Victory!
Battle: Lakeville 13 June 2012 13:51:26
Vehicle: T28 Prototype
Experience received: 4,088 (x2 for the first victory each day)
Credits received: 60,063
Battle Achievements: Mastery Badge: Ace Tanker, Master Gunner, Sharpshooter, Boelter's Medal, Steel Wall, Top Gun
I need to mention that i played T28 and liked it and my T95 is one of my favourite tanks, still play it on randoms just for fun.
As Cobra6 mentioned its a defensive TD. Dont charge enemy in it, you are too slow to follow heavies. If everything is going well they will finish off enemies before you will be able to shot, if all goes south you will be an easy pray for meds and fast HT, flanked and killed. Stay back, pick a nice spot safe from arty, and above all watch the minimap. If one flank is falling relocate and protect approach to base from that side. If you feelling adventourous follow the slowest heavies and try to support them. Never get caught out in the open, arty loves you. Always plan ahead, once set on path you dont have a time to return and change it, you are too slow.
Its not a TD for everyone, it requiers some patience and planning. Patience above all
If you dont like to sit in the bush, hugging rock or house and waiting in ambush think about changing line, Soviet tier VIII is mobile enough (lack of armor thou) and have a BIG GUN, German tier VIII have a bit of both, mobility and armor,128mm is nice too.

I do use it as support, but the aim is really bad - I could hit more with SU-152 derp gun. I have to be in constant arty cover, so enemy tanks out position me, but if I move I get splattered by arty :(
Also I don't understand it, but I get penned in the front every time - gun mount on hull or turret....

I'm about 47k off from the T30 at the moment, and I'm doing well in the Proto. As mentioned earlier, its lucky that most people don't know how weak the turret is. I quite often bounce T110 shots which is interesting, although on one occasion I've had my front penned by a Tiger... Could this be gold ammo in action?
T34s, Lowes and Tier 9+ heavies seem to have little problem penetrating the front however.
All in all, this tank really isn't my normal playstyle, but I'm considering keeping it once I reach the T30.

The armour is indeed not the stated value in most places. Only the upper front plate and gun mantlet are 200mm, the rest is way less (this is also where most people shoot). It's not a T28 armour wise, but you get a turret meaning you can stay hidden longer as you don't need to rotate the tank and get spotted.

Im on the T30 now but I tought id drop my 10 cents too looking back on the proto.
The 120mm gun really makes the difference. My winratio plummeted to 35% with this tank because it was useless with the 90mm/105mm gun. Especially when my proto was top tier my team was screwed. When getting charged by something like an IS3 all I could do was shoot the tracks and hope he needed his sweet time to repair it so I could get some shots in his side. When I got the 120mm I could suddenly penetrate the lower glacis of an E75 tho, and things got better instantly. Im still using the 120mm on my T30 as I need to unlock the top gun, but the 120mm seems adequate most of the time.
With this TD I had most my successes playing defensive in city maps, and exploiting camo and opening up with the big 120mm gun. You cant really rely on your armor in this TD as it just has too many spoft spots, even from the front. Firepower is what you need. Dont be shy of putting some extra credits into your gunner for this tank.

Worst tier 8 tank in the game FACT. Cannot hold its own.
Obviously you have no idea what you are talking about. I've played almost all Tier 8 tanks in game and the T28 Prot is certainly not the worst tank, and certainly certainly not for a fact. Your "fact" is your personal opinion.

Shh! don't correct these people saying T28 prot is bad, or they might nerf it!
The comment about worse tier 8 cracked me up. T28 prot. makes mincemeat of tier 8 tanks. My favourite matches are vs 5-6 enemy tier 8s. Oh and it's better gun than t34s as higher RoF on the t28prot.
t28prot is only tier 8 tank with a turret and a tier 10 gun. I just love any tank with a gun 2 tiers above its own level.
Yesterday, got home from work, got 8 kills with it in one round, not my best, but I still don't have it fully equipped.
t28prot is a keeper, like t40 and m18.

46 battles / 66 killed tanks here, got 120mm from first battle. I played also T28, Ferdi, JT, SU-152 and Foch (last one on test server). T28 Proto is definitely worst of them (even stock su-152 with base tracks engine is more interesting to play than fully researched Proto).
- you have terrible accuracy and aiming time (accuracy almost 0.4 and 2.3 aiming feels more like 2.6 or 2.7)
- even worst mobility than normal T28 since you are heavier
- your armor is alot weaker than in T28
- because of no roof half 30-50% of arty shots will insta kill u because of hitting armor rack
- thanks to thin turret armor you will have your gun damaged more often than in other tanks.
In theory your advantage is your turret, but it isnt. Turret itself have lol armor, no roof as i said before, painful slow speed (all turreted TD have simmilar), and with terrible gun statistics you will miss more opportunities than playing in normal T28.
Thats why people who play Proto after researching T30, eg playing for fun, dont really exist.
