It just a little useless topic about general knowledge. I want to know which metaphors used in EU countries for army pieces like Artillery or Infantry...

For example in Russia they are:
  • Infantry - Empress of Battlefield;
  • Artillery - God of War;
  • Tank - King of Battlefield;
  • AA Units - Shield of (Motherland) Skies.

Really? Somebody is actually calling infantry the Empress of the Battlefield?

I think it came from Katherine the Great times of Russia when Suvorov used infantry to its fullest potential.

this is interesting... In russian it must be much more practical to say "Empress of the Battlefield" than in English...

I think the matilda was called the "Queen of the Desert" by the British soldiers in the Africa campaign, but that's all I got (*cough* Sherman "Ronson/Tommycooker" *cough*).

According to my most trusted source the tiger was originally going to be called the "BMHOMTBTU".

I am unsure of how accurate this is Yamaxandu but it might provide a hoot nonetheless...

Some examples:

Teeny-weeny Airways - The Army Air Corps.
Brag Rags - Medals.

You might get one or two words from here too, although they are US words...
