Well, Salamander would be something like Tier V light in game terms, but with very devastating gun if mounting 76mm
Module damage all over the place
With 30mm RARDEN it would be hard, but then with APDS it would have great penetration (for WoT autocannons
)
From a "Scorpion" perspective- I would have to agree

One of the reasons I love WOT is the amount of effort that goes into the design/spec/functionality of each Tank from a historical slant. There are similarities in Basic Tactics- Fire positions (Hull up/Turret Down etc), use of the terrain, and perhaps the most critical of all "Team Work". But most of all its fun to play, I wish the same could have been said about the amount of hours spent on Tank Simulators during Training.
There are some awesome players out there who on a regular basis kick my butt. Learning all the time.

"Slamander" looks like its an ex-Scorpion with the gun whooped out and a drain pipe in its place, that also looks like BATUS?

I've seen a documentary recently about "noobie" US troops training to operate tanks. When I saw the simulators I realy thought they should play WOT on those
because the simulator graphic effects suck! LD
Lol, agreed- the graphics, certainly on CR2 Simulators leave a lot to be desired.

Hello The_Challenger,
I was just wondering if you could tell us a bit about the main battle tanks of the modern age, compared to the ones we see in the game? Only in a general sense of course.
What are main differences, similarities or peculiar notes. Please remember I am asking from a.. let's say "civilians" perspective though.. I don't really know much about tanks except for what one can learn from the WoT game.
I didn't really give one whit (?) about tanks until I started playing this game, that's when I started getting interested in the WWII-era tanks.. Then I saw this wonderful clip from Top Gear where Jeremy Clarkson gets chased around by a Challenger 2 tank (http://www.youtube.c...h?v=-wKfpPrRVIo). Hilarious! That's when I got interested in the modern MBTs as well, such as the Challenger 2, Leopard 2, M1A2 Abrams etc.
I've tried to find interesting (documentary-style) clips about these on youtube, but the few I find just seem to be focused on promoting one tank, and if you try to read any of the "discussions" going on there.. Well..
So this goes for everyone else out there as well, if you know of a good source of tank info, youtube or otherwise, and it's not too boring & technical, please post it here!
I realize this became a bit long and unfocused, so to sum up: Please tell us a bit about modern MBTs compared to WWII-era tanks (& tank tactics) and also if you will, a bit about modern MBTs in general.
Thanks & have a great day!

Hi,
Wow big topic,
I would suggest perhaps its a good topic to discuss in a seperate forum (Watch this space) and I will gladly answer any/all questions you have. Like most things mechanical it is just Technology that has shaped the future of Tanks. Even in my career I have seen vast differences from Chieftain to Challenger 2. Everything from improved suspension, power pack, Computerized sighting System and Thermal Imaging to crew comfort. Plus vast improvements in reliability.
Again all this coupled with the need in a variety of Operational Theatres to perform and the ever decreasing Defence budget ( Oh no were almost on Politics-Stop)
Great question

Wow! Welcome Mr. Cutland, this is a thread I'll surely bookmark and follow!
The most absurd feature in WoT in my opinion is the detracking and magical self-repair in the midst of the battle by an invisible crew
I'd like to ask to what level is the modern MBT crew self-sufficient when it comes to tank repairs? Certainly you don't carry spares around in a magical repair kit... What is achievable by the crew in field conditions or is the support always so near you don't have to worry about it?

So any amusing stories?
Possibly involving unsupecting peope and a two packets of screech power in the canteen?

Lol, I havent heard "Screech" mentioned for ages. I'm pretty sure that a lot of the stories would involve me being fired, so I will rack brain and think of some more suitable ones. Or if we meet at an event more than happy to chin-wag.

It would be nice to go out to BATUS to see some tank training, were you based in Canada?

Hi,
Depends entirely on the level of repair, and as you say we certainly wouldn't carry out (unless its really quick and simple) mid battle. On operations a recovery vehicle would tow you back to a safe area.
They are normally quite near, again dependant on the level of Op and the tempo of the battle. The only spares carried are usually track-pins as sometimes these would require replacing, a relatively quick and easy job. Track maintenance is critical and at the earliest, and safest, opportunity the Driver would dismount and conduct a quick check.
Hope this helps

Hi "RV"
I was never based in Canada but lost count of the amount of times we (Regiment) deployed there to conduct Battle-group Training. Amazing Tank Training area about the size of Surrey, absolutely vast and perfect for Armoured Tactics.
I also spent about four months there as "OPFOR" (Opposing Forces) where we were the "Enemy" for the Training Units. (Hence - awful piccy !)
Interesting time as we adopted Soviet style tactics (attack from the line of march etc).
