having enemy tanks camping or rushing, shooting in the center of them and hearing something like "that was close" (x4) and "penetration" and counting more than 2000 damage in one shot simply makes you fall in love with the cannon...

The splash is very nice.
With the new game mode "assault", it is very easy (with a bit luck) to take out an enemy artillery in the first minute, if you are the attacker.
Last game I did yesterday, i was on Malinovka as attacker.
We had 4 arty each side.
I just shot the group of bushes on the hill right when i finished loading my gun (35sec after game start) and killed a SU-8 with splash damage.
Guess the support team will now it because nearly everyone on enemy team called me a cheater and reported me :P
Btw ... it is even possible to oneshot a T95 with this gun ;)

My record is oneshooting a JT. Which, BTW, ensued a hell lot of hillarity, because it spawned a following conversation:
JT: Coward arty noob
Me: Oh, I'm so sorry. Did I ammorack you?
JT: Get a tank, arty coward
Me: Which one? I got 10.
JT: Shut up lame Soviet player
Me: Well, if you insist, I can bring out my KV-3. I was thinking about facing you in my PII. Or TigerP.
JT: <static noise>
Me: You're gone already? And it was so nice to have a chat... :(
The amount of trolling I perform seems to be proportional to the gun's calibre...

Hit a M103 a few days ago.
You should have seen my face when a small red number was shown where the M103 was standing and they read "-1850"....

Today I managed to score my personal record - on Widepark, I managed to hit M103 in the side through the narrow space (not even a street - more like a covered passage) between two buildings. -53% off his hull. No matter I got killed the second after pressing the trigger, he must have been quite pissed off by a sudden surge in repair bills XD

Been playing the S-51 for a while now (its elited) but have question.
I always use standard HE rounds but was looking at the supplies screen and noticed the gold ammo stats. They are Identical to the standard HE rounds. Is this a typo or is there some hidden benefit i'm missing here? larger splash radius maybe.
[edit]
Answered my own question: had not noticed the popup dialoge that shows that yes the splash radius is larger.

I like this tank a lot but for some reason I feel that the waiting time is far too long to be zoomed in. Because the maps are relatively small tanks move quickly. Even heavy tanks have the speed to move to cover from cover in q uick manner as there is too much stuff to hide behind. The slightest jerk on your tank sends the zoomer expanding the entire field.
Comparing this to the stats of the equilivant german arty and the american I feel that this tank could have a slight buff in zooming in or reloading.

I have the 203mm on the SU-14 and it's so damn random that I've given up and sold the bloody thing. I was looking forward to dealing big damage and was prepared for the sacrifices in other areas like poor mobility, long reload and no camo, but accuracy is just terrible.
I have reasonable accuracy in all the other artys I've tried (ranges 45-47% on average) but I very rarely hit for big damage with this thing, and I couldn't care less about splash damage, dealing 400hp dmg every 35 seconds is not really why I bought this.

The only tip i can give you is wait for about a second once fully focused, it seems to help. (on the s-51)
I usually splash for around 600-800hp and the occasional direct hit is somwhere between 950-1850 (i've not had it do more than that) depending on armour. lorraines and for some reason m103's seem to one shot really easily.
The object212 fires and aims quite a bit faster and I belive is more accurate. (gave it a try in the test server)

The s-51 is a strong hitter when it hits, but GWpanther has speed, faster reload, faster zoom, maneuverability, and a wider space to view without moving.
The s-51 is slow in everything, has a small arc, so it constantly needs to refocus itself. The only thing going is the gun and only when it hits.

Im NOT an arty lover I have pretty much ignored arty up to now but grind from KV2 with that lovely 152mm was so easy add I have my shiny new S51 now
To make it even easier, after the 7.5 patch about 25K of free exp emerged somehow on my account so I basically voided that painful 203 grind you are all talking about :D
my comments to this baby:
-Im next to unable to hit anything that moves faster than e100
, this arty should be renamed from S51 to "that was close"
-it doesnt hit any often but when it hits it hell hurts(i think it will get even better when the crew gets trained a bit) you have to take your time ad try making hits as sure as possible
-the longer range the better since refocussing is not that painful than
-If havent the Lowe I would cosider using this for moneymaking

Oneshotted a disappeared full HP Ferdi after our scout died on Siegfried Line. Aimed after his trace. He moved behind concrete cover, so it was a very lucky shot.

Though the S-51 and the SU-14 have the same gun, i found that the S-51 is a lot nimbler and aims a bit faster. Overall, i much prefer the S-51 as a tier VI arty.
For those who say they miss a lot, first train your crews to 100% and add Brothers in Arms, clutch breaking etc. Then your tank will become a monster.
Additionally, as you move up the tiers as arty, your shell count decreases, your reload time increases, which means you can no longer take those snapshots that you used to. You have to read the map, watch how the enemy moves, what tactic they're employing. Eventually you'll be able to take a quick look at your minimap and now pretty accurately at which points the enemy will appear or where he will retreat. Then you aim there and wait patiently and then KABOOOM!!!.
German TDs are especially lovely for high-damage artillery. Unlike their enemy counterparts, most german tanks, especially the TDs had thin (read 30mm) roof armor, which means when your 203mm shell lands, you get an armor pierce and the whole shell explodes inside the tank, doing full damage + knocking out modules, detonating ammo rack etc = 1-shot. To get such one shots, make sure your shell flight path is such that the shell lands on the roof of the enemy, not the sides.

Just had the pleasure of landing a direct hit across the map on a 100% health T34 Premium Heavy Tank behind cover,.. one shotted.

I saw better. Couple weeks ago I got cornered by a T-54 and an IS-7 in my AMX 90. Got cocky and went after the IS-7's ass without making sure he was alone.
Seconds after I die...
Think it's maybe the 2nd or 3rd time I've seen a tank survive crew death outside of tier 2 games with the Micromaus.

an S-51 drops a shell on the IS-7 and finishes off it's remaining 55% health and with the same shell kills off the crew of the T-54 (tank itself had something like 70% health left).

Apart from arty I like my French tanks amongst others and a couple of weeks ago had this happen to my BatChat:https://dl.dropbox.c...ied batchat.jpg
Took my Amx13-90 out for a run the next day and...:https://dl.dropbox.c.../artied amx.jpg
Only times I can remember this happening to me since as you say around tier 2.
