T-44 Dilemma: 122 mm D-25-44 or 100 mm LB-1?

http://worldoftanks....e/ussr-t-44.png

T-44 is your classic medium tank with average armor, decent acceleration, speed and maneuverability. It was designed to battle other mediums, lights and in some cases low level heavies. You can use it in group to fend off lone high tier heavies. If situation is right it is good idea to use T-44 as flanker to achieve tactical advantage. T-44 has two choices for the final gun: 100 mm LB-1 and 122 mm D-25-44T. Both guns have pros and cons that completely differ play-styles for T-44 driver.

100 mm LB-1
Damage: 230/230/330
Penetration: 175/235/50
Rate of Fire: 7,61
Accuracy: 0,35
The main advantages of this gun is its rate of fire and accuracy close to T-44 German counterpart - Panther II. Additionally it has decent aiming time that help a lot in skirmish assaults. Lack of damage from one shell is usually compensated by more intesive fire from player with addition of maneuvers. Secondary AP shells for LB-1 cost 255 credits which is relatively cheap to ignore some misses and unpenetrated hits. This gun is obvious choice for those players who want to engage enemy mediums, lights and other vehicles in close combat.

Some arguable facts that used by 100 mm LB-1 users to prove their point

Quote

Fact: "Your DPM is higher so your damage output is better."
Truth: In reality you need to play quite aggressively to utilize better DPM. DPM is useless if you play WoT version of hit-and-hide game because you can shoot at enemy only when its gun is done with reloading.

122 mm D-25-44
Damage: 390/390/465
Penetration: 175/217/61
Rate of Fire: 3,13
Accuracy: 0,43
With this gun your T-44 will have quite powerful one-time damage. In return you will sacrifice accuracy, aim time and rate of fire. The play-style of such T-44 is quite different from classic medium maneuverable battle. You role is changed from brawler / skirmisher / escort to almost pure support like Panther II (with more alpha-damage but less penetration). In most cases if you meet a medium tank of your tier in close combat you end up destroyed because of lack of DPM. This gun is obvious choice for players who can't let go their heavy tank habits. Additionally players that like to play in platoon can think about installing it if their platoon mates could deal with lack of DPM.

Some arguable facts that used by D-25-44T users to prove their point

Quote

Fact: "You inflict more damage with less danger since you inflict it in one shot"
Truth: In reality it's quite questionable since you need around double time to aim to land a good shot;

Fact: "The LB-1 does not do enough damage in close combat against Tier IX vehicles and higher."
Truth: Well, in most cases (against skilled opponent) it's not true. DPM is more easy to utilize in close combat rather alpha damage.

In my opinion T-44 armed with 100 mm LB-1 is more versatile and dependable medium tank compared to opportunist-like version with 122 mm D-25-44. So I suggest to play with 100 mm LB-1 if you prefer medium tank game-play. If you like heavy-like game-play you can arm 122 mm D-25-44 but... If you prefer heavy tank game-play more why not to get yourself IS-3 that has access to better 122 mm BL-9 gun?

And just for fun - rounded down potential damage output in close combat for both guns (time period 40 seconds):

Quote

100 mm LB-1: 6 shots for potential 1038-1728 damage (first shell preloaded).
122 mm D-25-44: 3 shots for potential 879-1464 damage (first shell preloaded).

My afterword is simple: it really doesn't matter what gun you use - just be useful to your team as much as possible. And if you are using 122 mm D-25-44... Do not withdraw if you get shot while aiming - it's just additional free shot to your enemies (this happens a lot even when enemy SPGs are not possible danger).

Nice guide. I think the LB1 is the only way to go for the T44, if you don't play this tank aggressively, you are doing it wrong!

Yamaxanadu while I appriciate the work you have done its really not a dilemma, dont use that damn 122mm gun on T44 !!!:)

At least maybe thanks to you people will stop driving with this gun in random battles well unless they are in enemy team then they can use it heh

yeah , good , and you can say that the more often you fire the more often you have a chance to : burn/ammorack OS/various crits shots.

So ,imo, for meds a rapid firing canon is a better  choice .

" you get this BIG ROUND E75 A.S.S in your sight, wow free pex":

1: with 100mm: you shot two time before e75 notice your presence because of the rest of your big mates annoying him, 1 hit  225 dmg, second hit 250 with a nice burn crit YEAH!

2: with 122: you shot 1 time at 350 , the e75 player see the amount of dammage and decide that YOU are a threat and turn his death tube on you, you fear and hide , end of story....you will maybe not have another chance to shot him...

Smaller guns seems to involve  the "this guy is not dangerous" syndrome, and let you make more pain in the ennemy rank before they realize their mistake.

Its is really the same question as in the german tree, there you have to choose between 8.8 and 10.5 caliber. I really think the "smaller" one is the better for the T-44. why? simple a medium normally make the first shoot(s) while driving, so the smaller have the better accuracy and the better ROF. Although if you are going to sniper, the small one is the better gun and last but not least, the ammo costs are much lower. I really think that is a K.O. for the bigger gun, but how so often the choice depends on the players playstyle and will.

Great tip. Have been using 122 mm D-25-44T myself, but finding it not really the right choice. Now i'll switch to 100 mm LB-1 and see how that works out for me.

I agree with Football Fan that this isn't much of a dilemma.  Unless you have a specific playstyle in mind that makes the most of high alpha and covers for the long reload, stay the hell away from the 122.  Please, don't just slap on the gun and get soloed by an Easy Eight.

When the T-44 still had only IDIOT as the best gun, one could have argued for the 122mm, but now with LB-1 the argument is moot.

PS. Even the IDIOT was/is better than 122.

100 mm always.

Quick to aim, more precise, you can shot from distance. With 122 mm tanker need to get really close to enemy (side) to overcome bad aim parameters.

In general I think mediums are better with gun that has higher ROF with bigger penetration but with less dmg.

Few days ago, by advice, I even switch Loraine to 90 mm (37 sec reload time). It saved my a** many times already as enemy thought I am still in reloading with 100 mm (47 sec reload time). Although it has less pen and less dmg, higher ROF already showed improvement in performance of that tank. At least for me.

Before introduction of LB-1 there was a small dilemma, at least for me. Back then I played almost equal amount of games with both cannons and I liked them. Now D-25 is rather obsolete (in my opinion at least).

I must agree with all. 122 mm could be temptation in the times when 100 mm IDIOT was the only other option. But with Lavrentin Beria - 1 (Yes that those letters mean :-D) 122 mm is not real option.

Pussies! Bigger is better...!
The 122 can be a gamebreaker, its awesome against T8+ heavies. Peek-A-Boo and circling, donno how many T10 i've killed like that.
I have Ace-tanker on the T-44, all thanks to you Mr. 122 mm. Thank you very much!

Its all about how you play it. I love brawling with this tank, im fed up with supporting after playing German line too much...

yeah, all in all the LB-1 is the more versatile gun, actually better performing overall, but on some maps and in some situations the D25 can be devastating, depends a lot on your playstyle.
D25 can be very good for some players, but for the majority LB-1 is the better choice I guess.
