Why do I suck so much at this tankie busin...

Leo is a PITA. I hated it. If you like the fast tanks but want to do more pew pew, consider going down one of the medium lines. The VK2801 is only good for scouting, and racing around.
Anyway, you will get there though, just keep at it. Try to watch others after you have died to see what they do, you can learn a lot that way. Also, get into the habit of paying attention to the minimap, enlarge it if needed, you need to be aware of what is happening around you at all times.
I also highly recommend playing as arty, even if you don't intend to play it. You will learn where arty safe spots are, and how to be more difficult to hit for arty players from it.

Cheer up, you have 370 battles so dont worry. Start worrying after 5k battles, right now just learn and enjoy the game
And good internet connection is a must!. Playing with ping 200 or aboce, can be very frustrating when shooting moving targets[unless you get server crosshair], and your performance will be much worse.

Although I almost have 1k battles now I still suck a bit... don't worry.
- Don't rush, even as scout, wait until arty and snipers are in position... it does not help if you spot enemies in their half of the field and your own teammates cannot hit anything as no one is in firing pos yet. ESPECIALLY ON ASSAULT MAPS!!! Please spotters wait until the heavies and long range killers are in position!!!
- Look where your team moves to (which can be difficult to see as in the beginning it is chaos :D)
- what are you up against... would you be a good arty protector (enemy light tanks are weak but very fast, so also here skill is needed)
- it is a team based game, don't go for the kill but what can you contribute to the match and your team
- are you fast or slow, good armor or weak armor, long range or point blank (gold ammo or not?)
Sorry if I repeated some things from above, I tried not to.
Alright tankers
lets g and melt some armor

It sounds like you were suffering from the attention of opponents with a greater observation range. You can kink your direction of travel, you can pay attention to the mini-map, both can help a bit with this situation.
When a team mate in radio range looses observation of an enemy it is often worth firing at that enemy, many times the enemy will vanish becuse of movement by the team mate and will still be in your gun sights.
You don't need to race up the tiers, every tier and every vehicle has something to offer. The more you learn about vehicles by following team mates activities following your death, the greater your understanding of WoT will become.

I keep meaning to ask -- which server was this other account on? Perhaps the game play is different on there? Always interested, because I've only ever played on the EU server and I've a feeling things are different elsewhere.
I played the Leo whilst the game was still in Beta early last year. The Russian server had just gone live so I must have been on the EU server. It was easy enough to get killed in the Leo though but I genuninely did quite well with it during the Beta period. It was rather feared back then. Its probably been nerfed a bit. I notice my self that I can take them out very easily with my slugger. A more difficult tank to take out (but also difficult to use) is the ELC AMX. If the driver is good its nearly impossible to hit the little bugger. I think its basically the new Leo.
Put it this way. During teh Beta period I could drive straight in to the enemy base take a few shots and drive back to base. I havent seen a Leo manage this once since I started playing again a few weeks ago. So its been nerfed or it maybe is just becasue theres a wider choice of better tanks that can hit the Leo.

Game has definetly changed since beta and leo used to be awesome there... right now it is still a good scout but there is no way you could easily kill a heavy with it. and defenders aiming at probing scouts have been through the t-50-2 experience by now, so fat chance at just zipping away...

The Leopard used to be greatly feared even post-beta because at one point it was the ultimate artillery-killer, by far the best vehicle for racing through enemy lines and murdering arty (though arguably the M5 with the 75mm howitzer wasn't a bad option either). It's since been surpassed at Tier 4 by the T-50 and at higher tiers the dedicated Tier 5 scouts (T-50-2, Chaffee and VK2801) and the French lights are all viable options for that kind of thing, and probably more importantly the presence of those vehicles in matches makes it much harder to get your Leopard behind enemy lines in the first place.
For people who've played arty long enough though that little silhouette of a Leopard lurking at the bottom of the team lists while the map was loading up was a deeply worrying sight.

Well, just by way of update...
I sat and thought what sort of game I wanted to play, and after much umming and erring, I decided that Tank Destroyers were my game. Looking at the options I felt that a TD with a turret would suit me - so I binned a couple of tanks and started with the Cunningham (the yankie starter tank).
Shortly after I acquired a T18 and shortly after that a 75mm howitzer to put on the front of it. Coincidentally, I hve a strage passion for the 75mm PAK howitzer, I just love the look of the little bugger, so I started my first battle with a non-AP TD.
WTF!!! This time makes me laugh out loud with joy! Its no long range sniper but tucked up in a bush with 26% cammo skill and a net and BLAMMM! 1-shot kills.
I am bloody loving this little box on tracks.
I am still getting circled some times but that is the skill of my opponent not my failing.
Sooo... plan for now is to build up skills then upgrade to the jeep.

I know what is the problem - experienced players coming to lower tiers for easier kills, everyone did this at least once.

I haven't. I'm disgusted when i see a fully pimped marder played by good player, only to raise his stats. That spoil game for others. But there will be always such people. I don't mind those who grind marder or play it for fun, not for stats.
