Are tier's IX & X worth it anymore? Need some input.

I just need some overall feed back.
I have the following tier 10's IS4 & T110E5 -
I rarely play them, but I've had both since they were introduced in the their current forms.
I 'like' them just fine - but I HATE losing in them almost more then I like winning.
Overall I still find the US tier 10 heavy fun - but the I really don't like the new game modes (hate assault passionately) - so I haven't had much incentive to play it...
For me: I find that they make a enough credits to be self sufficient - BUT they NEVER will justify the 6mil+ price tag (as far as actually 'making credits' goes - and I do have a premium account)
Now the bigger question is the next one:
Are the tier IX's worth playing to pursue tier X's? I ask this because for some reason I CAN NOT win games in tier 9 - in fact my OVERALL w/l ratio in tier 9 is abysmal:
Tank tier Winratio
10 55.93%
9 45.85%
8 52.74%
7 56.51%
6 48.71%
5 51.61%
4 51.18%
3 53.06%
2 52.43%
1 58.45%
I currently have: Lorry, IS8, T30 & Patton. I've recently sold my M103 -almost never played it.
The lorry is now back to stock (aside from suspension) thanks to its tier update - and I'm not finding it the least bit of fun - in fact I haven't won a game in it since 7.5. I have the free xp to get the engine and gun - but I'm not sure its worth that hard earned investment. Which makes me question the Batchat...
IS8: This tank is mostly fun. I still need the last engine - but I'm not sure the IS7 is worth pushing more - given that I don't find it much of a threat...battleship cannon is nice though...but I already have an IS4 - and the IS8 is solid overall...
T30: I'm a terrible TD player - got this guy when he was a tier 10. The only reason I'm keeping him is because I'd LIKE to unlock all US tanks someday...maybe Only played 12 games in him since the switch I've won 3. Lost 3 straight this morning...
Patton: I love and hate this tank. Lost my last 6 games in it - in fact the game pisses me off more then its fun. I've never understood why its considered the 'best' tier 9 in the game...And I keep hearing mixed things about the M48a1 - EU server claims is overpowered - US server seems to be saying the opposite. The think about this tank seems to be its complete lack of middle ground - it either wins big of fails big - almost no such think as a 'gg' while playing it.
T54: I don't have this one yet (love my T59) - BUT I've always liked the look of it - I don't really want the T-62a - but I'm just wondering if I'll be setting myself up for disappointment again if I get the T54
ST-1: Loved the look of this guy, but I REALLY don't want to play through the KV4...in fact I've been avoiding playing my KV-3 (again game modes) - and then I've noticed how TERRIBLE the ST-1 global w/l ratio is... so I might just give up on this chase...
So: conclusion - what tier 9's and 10's are worth the chase? - I want to have fun - and enjoy the game play...

If you're going to join a clan that is active in global map, then its a must. If not, then you should get it anyways, because its fun.

They are not worth chase. You can have similar or even better fun in lower tiers without worries about credits and long hours spend in stock tanks to make 45k XP to get better gun.
I have 3 X tiers and 3 IX tiers among - as I remember - 13 tanks altogether, but I have so many top tiers only because WG gave me T34 which made making credits easy. Without T34 I would have probably only one X tier and 2 IX tiers and I would finance them with many tier V and VI tanks.
Top tanks are worth grinding only if you want to play in clans (and you are at least decent player). I don't care about clan wars, so I have top tanks accidentaly.
I always tell new players: do not haste to top tiers, they are expensive and they really do not make you more powerful. You meet so many strong enemies in top battles, that you can die in X tier as easy as in tier V or VII. Also with new matchmaker spreads lower tiers are not so painful.
So remember tier IX or tier X tank will not make you more succesful player
In reality it is harder to have in them good stats, specially win ratio.

I have been wondering the same for a few months and decided THEY ARE NOT FUN to play. Since 7.5 even less so.
I have the usual in the Shed m103 E75 IS4/7 patton E50 T54 bat chat
They almost never get played. In fact i sold all french meds apart from the Bat as they are now so over matched
This is a game and fun to me is key to relaxing.
I now play T5-T8. Most games fast moveing with a nice randome level of skills.
T9 T10 battles because of the small map size and frequent rotation you almost know what is going to happen after 1 minutes of contact. Its like tank chess with move and counter move and HYPER cannons and ARTY one shot kills from Orbit to punish the unwarey or unlucky .
If i wanted this I would go and play chess.
So for me its T5-T8 Its where the fun is.
See you in the middle

When I first started playing I thought I would go to Tx. After playing a few games in a couple of Tix, I decided those tiers were simply to expensive to operate. So now I do not stray past T8.

Tier X is fun in it's own right, but you can a lot more FUN in tiers 3-7 and someitmes in tier 8 and possibly 9. Tier X vehicles are mainly massive moneysinks and everyone will focus you since you are "the biggest threat" on the field.
But again if you play in an active CW clan or you can afford to operate them, go for it.

Either way play for enjoyment... if you're not sure you like a tank, just stick to playing it when you feel like it, or play it with friends if you feel like thinking of certain strategies to make the tank more effective. If you get more frustration than enjoyment then just stick to playing lower tiers for a while. It's just a game.
Personally I think tier 8 and 9 both got shafted in 7.5, since they no longer meet tanks 3 tiers below, but they didn't get the advantage of seeing less higher tiers. I personally love tier 7, but no clue why.
Lorraine isn't back to stock btw, the 7.5 lorraine starts with the 2nd unlockable engine (I believe) from 7.4. The old stock and 1st upgrade were removed. And you can get the gun without having to get the 90mm first... which could be considered better. I personally enjoy the lorraine, but again, depends on your own playing style.
The T-54 is fun in it's own way. Not as fun as when it was the end of the line, but it's still capable of circling takes, absorbing shots and fast track repair. But if you already have the Type59, I'd say save yourself the effort and time... the Type59 has amazing matchmaking and ridiculous armor for it's tier making it the best tier 8 medium.

I sold my IS-4, just didn't find it any fun. Love the IS-8 though. I won't play any tank for a credit grind, I only play the ones I enjoy. Thankfully I quite like the new KV-1 with its rapid fire gun (with rammer and brothers in arms as well it fires so fast!) so credits aren't a problem.
#9 Posted 12 August 2012 - 06:39 PM
it would appear many here are more concerned with credits than having fun!
what are credits for? buying tanks! what do you do with tanks? play them!
so just get some tanks and have fun....
batchat is the best tier x medium in the game in terms of potential and imo Fun!
all the tier x mediums are alot of fun. if you like meds!
not sure about tier x heavies...
tier x tank destroyers ave uber guns and trollcannons are always fun.
its not about the tier... just find something you enjoy and play it and others.. if you struggle for funds then buy a churchill or valentine..

Tier 10 was funny before the recent updates, right now penetration eachother is actually becomes easier in this tier. I dont play it anymore.
Tier 9 can still be funny, for example E75 is still madness or object 704 / T30 still has the fearfactor. But all in all i dont play this as well anymore, because penetrating eachother is too easy as well.
Tier 7-8 is still worth it. Those matches are fun, just like matches down to T5 as well. T34 and ARL mark the only expections which should not have been there.
Right now WOT tier based skill requirement for a successfull match looks like this..
Tier I very low
Tier II very low
Tier III low
Tier IV low
Tier V medium
Tier VI medium
Tier VII med-high
Tier VIII med-high
Tier IX medium
Tier X low
This is why i refuse to play T IX and T X, its just too stupid and anybody and his catdog can penetrate you even in the heaviest tanks.
By the way, the WOT equivalent for the upper front plate of the Maus is 294mm, so yea, TX TD guns can even pierce the best armored tank in the game without carefully aiming. This fact alone is redicilous.

I find myself a bit in the same boat as you, Ghostcat.
Patch 7.5 really made me wondering if it is worthwhile to invest time in getting some tier IX/X tanks anymore.
I have 2 tier X: T110E5 and IS-4.
The T110E5 I loved playing pre 7.5, and did pretty well in it. However, I barely took it out since the latest patch arrived, because the overload of tier X and high tier arty made playing tier X in general considarably less fun. Still it's a great tank I love playing and I'm sure I will pick it up again once tier X battles have normalized (may take some time, I'm afraid).
I never played the IS-4 at tier X because I don't have a good crew for it and did not have the credits to give it the necessary equipment so far. The recent state of tier X battles do not speed things up though.
Regarding tier IX tanks, some of them are still worth playing. I currently have an IS-8, M103 and T30. Overall, there is still fun to be had at tier 9, although like you I feel I kinda struggle at tier 9. Except in M103, but the stats don't really show it because my winrate in tier 9 T34 was only 44% and M103 took over that stats. I'm pretty sure though my win rate in the M103 alone is around 60%.
IS-8: Hated it at first and had a terrible, terrible start. Now it's full ops and it kinda grows on me, I even like taking it out now and don't feel horribly underpowered anymore. Still it's not an easy tank to play. I like playing the IS-3 at tier XIII more (one of my favourites).
T30: Love this tank, but can be very challenging and frustrating to play. Great battles with 5000+ damage done are often followed by annoying losing streaks. It's a tank best played in platoons imo since your performance depends a lot on your team, but playing the T30 can be very, very rewarding and fun.
M103: Misunderstood by many, it's one of my favourite tanks actually and do pretty well in it. Very versatile with workable armor, only slightly less mobility and speed compared to the T110E5, but without the cupola weakspot and the same great gun. Very much still worth playing imo. I recommend trying it again. While a not as good as the T110E5 obviously, playing almost the same tank at tier IX is great. I fear no tank in it, even took out a 100% T95 in a one on one at one point without being able flank it (with some luck though). Highly recommended (having a 380% crew in it helps, obviously).
However, I'm unsure if the tier IX and X I'm still aiming for are worth it:
- Lorraine: Really seems struggling at tier IX and feels kinda weak to have in your team. They often die quickly. Not looking forward to owning it anymore.
- Bat. Chat: Has great potential, but having it in your team often seems either a blessing or a curse (a curse more often sadly). Usually one of the first tanks to die. Seems like a lot of noobs driving it these days. Not sure if I still want it, not sure if I can get it to work. I'm only at the AMX 13 75, so I may stop the line at the '90 that seems still good.
- T95: Really close now so I will get in anyway, if only for it's awesome looks. Don't think I will play it much though, may be one of those tanks that are kind of pointless to have in todays state of the game. Please correct me if the T95 is still viable. Grinding the T28 proves to be sort of fun but is not easy sometimes.
- Patton: nerfed now and I think I will like the upcoming second US medium line more (really hope for a T57 and T95). Still Pershing is unlocked, so I will get that one and see where it goes. M48A1 seems good, but I don't think I can stomach the grind now. Did great in the T20 and I am curious how I will perform in the Pershing. My future with this line depends on that.
- Jagdtiger: They seem to be played often now, and proof often an asset to the team in my experience. Really fear it's gun so I think the Jagdtiger is still worth playing. I'm playing Ferdinand now and will try the Jagdpanther II after it first though. Not sure if the Jagdpanzer E-100 is worth it to grind for once I have the Jagdtiger. We'll see how it goes. I like the Ferdinand and will like the JP II even more, judging from my test server experience. Probably will grind the JT with the latter.
- T110E4: Seems like a safe bet, can't go wrong with this one. A very well rounded tank destroyer. Already played it on the test server, but is at risk of getting nerfed soon. I'll probably see how the nerfs turn out before getting one. Still like 120k xp to go anyway and 6mio credits aren't easy to hoard. Grinding the T30 is a weird mix of frustration and fun.
- IS-7: Really want this in my garage, but grinding the IS-8 is hard (although it gets better). Still seems to be a great tank although the new tier X TD's are dangerous. Still arty numbers in tier X battles really have to dwindle before I even think about playing it.
I want the tier XIII/IX/X French TD too, but I've not even started the line as of now. Since I play mostly tanks for fun now it can take a long time before getting there (if ever).

First off thanks for that thought out response - good to know I'm not the only one in this boat!
And secondly...2nd US medium line? Nothing would make me happier (US meds are my favorite)...Do have have a link to that info?

Sure, here (US forums), confirmed by WG's CEO.
The announcement had surprisingly little attention here though, I'm thinking most people on EU-server don't know it yet. But there has been a lot of news lately anyway, light tanks up to tier VIII for instance (Walker Bulldog should be one of them), British tanks, German Waffentrager line, second German med line, second Soviet TD line, German Sturmpanzer line, tier VIII arty moved to tier X, physics, new rendering of maps, etc. etc. Lots of goodness still to come
BTW, since you hate Assault so much, you do know you can 'opt out' assault from 8.0 on, right? I know I will.

The announcement had surprisingly little attention here though, I'm thinking most people on EU-server don't know it yet. But there has been a lot of news lately anyway, light tanks up to tier VIII for instance (Walker Bulldog should be one of them), British tanks, German Waffentrager line, second German med line, second Soviet TD line, German Sturmpanzer line, tier VIII arty moved to tier X, physics, new rendering of maps, etc. etc. Lots of goodness still to come
. Probably the US med news just snowed under.
BTW, since you hate Assault so much, you do know you can 'opt out' assault from 8.0 on, right? I know I will.

Excellent news! Thanks, I really would have expected more 'to do' around here about another medium line!
Yeah, I know about the opt out option coming in 8.0. And I can't wait for it. I might actually try 'grinding' again

I might as well tag and also ask is it worth it even going to tier IX at this point.
I own an ISU-152 and I feel that i'm at my limits right now, sure I can reach BL10 over time but due that my IT school starts in october, getting to object 268 is out. No I do not intend to use the vehicles for clanwars, just to have fun in the game. So I guess i'll just reach BL10 and call it quits in going further down that line.
Why bother grinding if I won't have fun or time right?

up to tier 9 is still fun , but tier 10 sucks now with the new tier 10 meds and tds.

Biggest problem with t10 is the arty not the tanks. All battles now seem to have 3-4 t7+ arty. This makes for little fun on any open map unless you are a scout or the arty.
Incidentally suprised you sold M103 - that tank is still great, and can do just fine in a t10 battle with it's moblity, turret depression, fast aim, and accurate high pen gun (at least when it's not getting artied to death).

I don't really having any issues with arty - I think they're a huge balancing factor in this game.
As far the M103 goes - nothing wrong with the tank, I just liked the T110E5 better. I think I would have kept the M103 if I wasn't plagued by the horrible record I had from the T34.
