So i am still new at the game, still under 50 matches, so i have been trying everything to get a feel for what i like, i so like spg's but dont feel like there is any i would really want till much later, tank destroyers are also fun but i am not th emost subtle player so i die fast in them, then i bought a french light tank trying to get the ELC AMX and atm i have the T3 AMX38, as far as i knew french tanks had semi decent guns (although not so much at higher tiers), good speed and bad armor, however this little badboy has similar armor to alot of T4 and 5 light tanks and even a couple of mediums, its so good infact that last game with good tank positioning i managed to take a total of 429 shots from the other teams light and mediums and actually survive.

After the match i really decided i wanna play the defensive type tank, the one that protects ur less well armored tanks and can take the punishment, even if it cant dish it out.

So what i am asking is if anyone can reccommend any t3, 4 and 5 tanks that can soak up alot of punishment for the team? or even which countries tech tree would fit best not only for these tiers but further along the line.

any advice is much appreciated

There is no point playing a tank that can take the punishment and can't dish it out. You don't get the money/exp for staying alive (well you do but that's not the point), you get money/exp for damaging others and Lowe/T34 are best for it. Lowe is more universal while T34 is a more situational tank (if you can show your enemy only your turret then you can laugh at him and shoot him till there's a burning carcass of him left).

At tier 4 the choice is obvious: M3 Lee.

Well, I'll recommend you to go into the french Heavy Tank tree, BDR and other heavys are gr8. Also, the russian HT can be easy to ride, especially the KW3 line (or go to IS if you think you can handle him).
Let go off, for some time the french lights, theyll surely will be too hard to play to novice player.

Highly armored tanks are not that easy to use later in game. Even KV line is not that good armored if not played with brain.  And low tier frenchies are "special" fun.
Higher tiers frenchies get relatively low armor (Arl44 front as exception).

Later, american TDs (Tier 8/9) might be your style, but they are ridiculously slow. Sadly most of the time armor is only useful against lower tiers. In my experience (up to Tier8) only KV5 can be considered adequatly armored (even with R2D2), on every other tank i tried, you get plenty of waekspots or at least it feels like that.

Best advice i can give: don't camp too far behind the fronlines, and keep moving.

Greetings.

If you want to take punishment in early tier I'd really suggest the french heavy line.
Up to the B1 it has really good armour and if you play B1 you will always be top tier, as tht is this tanks matchmaking.
Ill just take a moment to praise the B1:
-very bouncy armour for its tier (about 90mm in front if you cound angle, more if you angle it)
-nice mobility (the top speed si low but the acceleration and turn rate is nice)
-decent gun   (you will be able to penetrate everything except the B1 and AMX40)
So for what you described the B1 is perfect and I loved it myself.
PROBLEM: after the B1 comes the BDR G1B and all the french heavies after it have basically no armour and are fast support tanks. Which is opposite of the playstyle you described. So I'm suggesting just researching the B1 and having a good time. :Smile_blinky:

If you wanna progress to higher tiers with this playstyle you should probably go for the russian heavy line. the KV line.
All the KV tanks have really good armour and actually have pretty strong guns. They can take a beating and you can bounce alot. And I mean ALOT.
PROBLEM: the KV line really lacks mobility. They are not slow-they are slughish.  The KV-4 is slower than tectonic plates! :Smile_ohmy: Their turn rate sucks, they have minimal acceleration and their top speed is under 30. Because of this they are a treat for artillery. :arta:

Basicaly, that's it from me. I wish you alot of fun and alot of steel walls! :Smile_honoring:

best armour doesnt mean they will be the best tank.

I would say Marder 2 is a great T3 tank, but it has paperthin armour - keep yourself hidden and snipe (use gun laying drive and hammer the enemy!)
T4 is a poor tier imo everything is awful
T5 has lots of choice - Panzer IV, M4 and KV, T49 are all good T5 tanks. They have advantages and disadvantages over each other - but all are fun.

It really comes down to your playing style - if you want to go ploughing in to the enemy then a paperthin td will do nothing for you but a KV will soak up a fair bit of punisment.

Welcome to the game and enjoy :Smile_Default:

Pz38NA - tier 4

38NA ends up being a scount for higher tier matches far too many times - personally id avoid this as OP only has 60+ games under their belt and it will actually ruin the game for them

as a side note: my KV-2 reaches 34 km/h, and that above 30, not below as someone posted, but generally the KV line is slow-ish.

KV-4 seems to be the KV-5 without R2D2, but with a nice exposed commander on top of the turret.

Tier 3 - Marder 2, Luchs, T82, SU-26, BT-7 and T-46 is also pretty good. I also hear that the Tier 3 french TD has a pretty decent gun, not as much damage/pen as marder's but more accuracy

Tier4 - Pz 3, Hezter, M8A1, T-50, AMX 40 in tier 4 matches with it's derp is very nice, and i found the B1 was also pretty nice.

Tier 5 - KV-1, SU-85 (Haven't tried it with the 85mm but it looks a beast with accuracy and ROF), T49, Pz4 (i'd also recommend pz3/4)

But really the ultimate question should be, Which end tier tank do you want. (t8 plus)

Thanks for the reccommendations so far, i have a T-46 atm with a pretty powerful gun on it but the aim rate and reload rate sucks, i am liking longer range sniping types too, so if i like a little bit of armor and a long range (prefer pen and accurancy over dmg) gun, which do u think would fit that play style am i looking at TD's for that?

Nope, his not so hard to control, but it got lower armor than kv-3, so it doesn't forgive mistakes :)
Hope you'll enjoy the game, but keep strong, the tiers from 1-4 are hard to play, until you'll reach 5's, which are great!
