A little bit of clarification

Stormscythe's Photo Stormscythe 19 Aug 2012

Hi everyone Storm again,

So i made a topic asking for some advice on T3,4 and 5 tanks and got alot of great feedback however as i play more games (went from under 50 to 100 yesterday) i find my likes and dislikes and what role i would like to play changing alot as i progress, so what i would like from u helpful and experienced bunch is if u could help me out.

i am starting to understand the gameplay and tactics alot better now but i am finding it hard to find my niche in the game, and which type of tank suits me also i am still unsure as to what certain types of tanks are ment for so, with that, could anyone give me a brief rundown of tank classes (light, med, heavy, td) and what there role in a game should be, any tanks that excell in this roll from the mid tiers (4-7) and which end tier tanks u would recommend.

my main issue is i have no idea what light tanks are for, i thought they would be scouts but for example there are higher tier french heavies with the same speed and the lights, better guns and pen, and more armor, i havent check radio distance but why would u play a light wiith 60kmph top speec when u can play a heavy? what am i missing same goes for the mediums

i am also surprised i asked for which tanks can be used as snipers and got told alot of german med tanks can be great which is cool but i thought sniping would be forTD's? based on the fact thier armor isnt amazing and they have no turret.

i like the idea of going down the french light tank line cause it allows me to not only get the lights (auto loaders at T6) i can easy branch into the arty's (really think the bat chat is the best t8 arty for my playstyle) but again not sure if the lights are a waste of time when heavies seem to have better stats (again i am probably missing something)

really i would like a mobile accurate sniper (with a turret) that isnt totally useless at close range or a decent mobile scout that wont die in 2 secs ( i like the idea of lights but i got no clue what they are for)

anyway thanks in advance

I should point out i went into ussr and french trees, i got the T-28, B1 and amx 40 (just grinding free xp untill i decide which t5 to buy) so i would prefer recommendations from these trees but wouldnt be totally against switching if another county had a tech tree line more suited to what i am looking at.

Do you really don't like it If he hasn't a fully rotating turret?

its not that i dont like having no turret its just that as i am still so new to the game and dont know the maps well enough i always find myself in bad positions when i try play td's and end up getting suck up on or flanked by smalls/meds and by then i cant turn fast enough to do anything and its game over for me lol

maybe in time when i get my positioning and awareness up i can try no turret vehicles but for now its too punishing of mistakes  compares to turrets and i am new so i make alot of them

look, I would recommend you 2 just play the game, for starters you have 2 stick 2 just one branch, and one nation, don't build up free exp- it takes 2 long,

every tank of every nation have their own specs, and it would be dumb 2 generalize them, you just have 2 find your preferences on your own...

btw. for arty I recommend german tree :)

and sorry for bad english :/

so i think you it's better to let the elc AMX wait.

Ok, i'l try to break this down and make some sense of it:

Light tanks: They have the same camo value when they move and stand still, so they trade away armor and damage to be less visible and have better speed/acceleration. They are like ninjas.
Medium tanks: They have lower armor than heavy's, usually made to support heavy's and TD's by flanking or sniping from a good position. They trade away armor for a little more camo and some better speed.
Heavy tanks: The "all-rounder", easy to play as you don't have to think about camo or hiding in that degree you have to for the other classes. Some are good as snipers, some are good as brawlers.
Tank Destroyers: Trade away a turret and allot of mobility to gain some better camo and they have the biggest direct fire guns in the game. They also have a lot more armor in the front than normal tanks.
SPG/artillery: They have good camo, low line of sight, weak armor but they have a lot of firepower and fire indirectly. It's difficult to master artillery.

I recommend going for heavy tank to start with. And also focus on one nation first, so when you decide to get another class you will already have many of the modules researched. That will shorten some of the grinding.

You should get an American M3 Stuart and/or a Luchs so you can zip about finding nice spots on all the maps/learn to scout and stay alive/find where arty hide and hunt them down.
The Russian heavies start at a low level and are all effective. American heavies have very large weaknesses to work around so probably a bad place to start
Mediums are probably anyone but russians as the middle of the russian med line has some seriously mediocre tanks.
TD's get Marder, HE 105 using Hetzer and Stug to get used to proper TD's. Yank low level TD's are fun but not really like anyone elses.
Oh and get the tier 3 russian arty as its the easiest to use of all arty in the game and will show you where all the arty shadows to hide in are as everyone you cant hit helpfully shows you them.

A tank that needs to go hull down to be most effective teaches you some good stuff too but tbh get a P IV as with top turret its armoured comparably to a tier 8 med if u face them and hide body. Yank heavies teach you but tbh they suck mostly till tier 7..

you should get on the wot wiki and read about the mechanics of the game: spotting, try to memorise armor vallues/ penedtration-rof-dmg for different tanks, how angling of the tank affects effective armor etc.

there was a nice how to scout tutorial in pdf form with 100 ish pages on the forum also with pictures of different maps and usual routes of attack for different tanks; usefull video tutorials on youtube also... there is way to much info to condense in a post ...

the sticking to 1 branch of 1 nation only advice doesn't apply to people just starting the game from scratch imo .. try to split your garrage slots on types of tanks you want to try.. and unlock at least 1 type of tank see what your confortable with etc.

there are branches with tanks that are borderline on the definition of it\s role : heavy's that play more like a medium(kv-1s pops into my mind i guess), TD's that play like a heavy (the last few tureted american TD's are a good example)

about roles.. HT will create chokepoints with a peekaboo tactic(more often) or spearhead a breach the line type of action(less often); Meds use mobility to flank and punish weak sides ; TD'.s can snipe/create chokepoints ; lights keep enemy's spotted or play like meds and flank'; spgs punish brave and careless tanks ...

about what tanks to get ...T5 seems a nice tier to practice in.. try to stick in this tier for a while till you get the hang of stuff
for HT: you have 3 choises T1/KV-1/ BDR the kv-1 beeing the most newbie frendly of them all i guess , nice tank to learn how to play a heavy
for meds: PZ3/4 PZ4/ M4 / T-34; pz4 plays like a sniper/TD the others are more flanking type weaker guns better mobility compared to the pz4
TD's: american ones are pretty fun have turets same guns one has armor one has speed try and see what you like the other ones have no turret compare them based on mobility/gun/armor
SPG's:dunno what to say didn't get past t3 ones not that fond of them i guess... experiment away

lights for t5 are tricky because of repair costs exp req to get them and MM ... easiest one to practice on would be the french one but it has no turret .. try to find some youtube reviews / gameplays and see what and what

light tanks in general you should experiment with last especially for a new player to WOT.

you asked why would a tank be good as a sniper ...well if you have paper armor and bad mobility wise is to keep range... if you have good acuracy /high penetration logic dictates you can do stuff at range also (you lose 4% penetration for each 100m between you and target)

about lights chafee/t50-2/vk2801 are pure endgame scout tanks have repair costs on the 10k range
the french ones are weird hybrids between meds and lights ... not all lights play the same you should check the traverse speed and compare them based on more then top speed ...as i said experiment with the light tanks last... some are good for active spotting some for pasive some for flanking etc

"really i would like a mobile accurate sniper (with a turret) that isnt totally useless at close range or a decent mobile scout that wont die in 2 secs ( i like the idea of lights but i got no clue what they are for)"  you cannot have mobile acurate sniper and close range as the description for your favourite tank ... think rock paper scissors ... same with the scouts that wont die fast ..

try a kv-1 for heavy // pz4 as sniper// pz3/4  and m4 or t-34 as flanker/ stug or su 85 for turetless TD and a m10 or t49 for a tureted one/ as starting point for t5

b1 and amx 40 are/were a pain to grind on but bdr has the best gun for a t5 heavy and the arl44 is pretty nice for a t6 heavy
the amx12t is a nice taste of autoloader capability

have fun and ask away if you have more questions ... gonna stop here for thetime beeing
