A question about being a useless light tank
SteelDreams

Hello everybody,
I am currently playing with a German PZ38(t) light tank and usually encounter tier V heavies.
My question is:
Is it possible to demage or at least annoy a heavy without penetrating it?
Thank you in advance.

You are not for decoration, you are very important. Watch on youtube "how a scout can win a game", this will help you understeand how spotting works and what is scouts part in battle:

Oh. and you shoud not shoot heavies, unless you want to distract them. You have something they don`t have: speed. Try to find another targets: big fat arty is there just waiting for you.

Yes. Arty and big guns do help me a lot when I'm running around the big ones.

Tier III vs tier V is, with exception of TDs, pretty hopeless as most of them have enough frontal armour to ignore you and the mediums are too agile and can take you down too fast to be reliably flanked. KVs are more or less invincible to anything with less than 90 pen or decent sized HE shells.
Just try to attack distracted enemies when your buddies are grabbing their attention.
^It gets better though, tier IV vs Tier VI or Tier V vs Tier VII is a much less hopeless fight.

Define decent sized HE shell.
Please.

Not the worst idea. This tank is really sluggish, so in many cases you will be able to avoid it.
This by the way is not only a problem of lower tiers. It stays the same up untill tier VIII. If I meet a tier X tank in my Tier VIII Tiger II I am pretty much dead in a one on one. You always have to adapt, to team up versus these enemies. So better learn it as soon as possible...

You can be a "passive scout" too, not very fun maybe, but observing form a distance and keeping them lit up for arty to fire on.
You can also be very useful for capping when the otehrs aretied up in engaging the enemies.
A good shot in flank or rear can also reset a cap in a critical moment, even if you don't cause a lot of damage.

Well it might seem hopeless with these low tier lights that are not scouts, but that does not mean you are useless. I mean the only tanks in your tier spread that are difficult/impossible to penetrate are the T1 heavy and KV-1. If you steer clear of those tanks and let your bigger teammates worry about them things will go down much easier.
The Pz38t is somewhat agile so you can easily follow your bigger mediums or heavies, and when you find a busy enemy, try to flank him or take out his tracks. It is a hard tier, especially for begginers. Tier 4 can be more fun if you know what you are doing, but at tier 5 you will start to see when the game is really getting fun. So try to hold out.
So just to recap, try passive scouting, try to flank, try to track and just try to deal as much damage as you can.
