Just equip net and binos and use it as a bushscout and let your mates do the killing. Forget about suicide scouting and fighting. Just sit in the bushes and wait untill most enemies are dead. Now you can go and try to hunt some arties or lone td. If you go too early you will probably die too soon. Either gun is crap, but the mini-derp worked best for me.
Always remember that the M5 excells only in one thing: passive scouting. It is small and fast, so use this. Fighting is not one of its strenghts, sorry.

I'd like to add, train for camo skill.
Mini derp means Hurwitzer gun, just in case you have to fight!

The hardest thing on this grind, is to stay off the guns trigger!

Tbh, for me it was not much of a grind once I realised what to do and what not. It does take some time and not everbody likes this passive way of scouting. But I quite enjoyed the M5. Finding good spots and lines of fire was fun in my eyes and it is a good preparation for the M24 Chaffee. In many ways I drive my Chaffee as I drove the M5. Of course now I can fight a lot of things. With an M5 you can only fight really small stuff plus a lone SPG or TD. And that is higly situational. Most of the time you are doing much better (and collect more XP) if you try to stay invisible and light up targets for the heavies or td´s behind you. Don´t go too far and position yourself carefully. And resist your triggerfinger. That is, how azakow rightly said, the hardest part. :Smile_glasses:

I have found the 75mm to be completely and utterly useless. Less than 20 damage per shot on tier 4 French arty (sides). Less than 25 average on M3 Stuart (sides again). All at (near) point blank range.

What am I supposed to do with this thing? I know about passive scouting but every now and then something does drive into you or you see a clear path to enemy arty. Seems that even that is a waste of time...

it's random

it can oneshot every single tank up to tier 4, and also can hit them for 9-20 dmg

I got fed up with Grinding my M3 Lee so sold it and have gone up the light tank tree and its M5 for me next, just saving up the 150K credits to buy it then I have the joys of grinding this thing, I like the M3 but as I have said in other threads the game seems to be designed that tier 4 is a grind so you have to end up buying gold. I sold my Panzer 3 as I got fed up grinding that piece of junk, I got Pz 38NA now which I am told is a terrible tank too (not tried it yet), Hetzer is a little easier to grind, basically all the tier 4s except maybe the russians are bad (funny old thing). Some days I think perhaps I should just play my tier 1-3s as I love most of them.

Anyway I don't want to be a whiner so I will try the positive suggestions and use the M5 as a passive scout, I have a spare net, just need to wait for another 50% off day and buy some binocs for it.

It's a killer when top tier, and a somewhat decent scout in high tier matches.
Too bad the guns are worse than useless against all tanks of higher tier :(

T4's aren't actually all that bad, what makes them seem that first time around playing them is low crew skill. When you hit t7 or so you'll have a 100% crew and some extra perks/skills on it, the game opens up in a whole new way.

So in a sense, maybe they are forcefully encouraging you to buy premium, but can you blame them? :) It's what this game is supposed to do, profit.

Yes, thats right, I would happily have paid £30-40 which is what I pay for most games as its a great game, I have spent £6 on gold so far, and I think if I can limit it to £30-40 then thats sensible as the game is worth that much for sure. Well done WG, keep it up!

PS Morale is high today had a hoot with my hetzer last night, stuck the 105 derp gun on and went to town 1 shotting folks, getting Top gun and Reapers LOL

Thats why I want to Jaolpy my M5! Or failing that upgrade to a  T8 recce. Yes you'd be armed with a .50 cal, but thats about as much use as the current weapon selection.
The other options are of course the AA tanks on a M5 hull.

I really did not like the M5 grind, but with 1914 eff. rating in 125 battles I was doing something right  . I used this little tanks pretty aggressively, derping low armor tanks, arty and causing mayhem. Passive scouting one second, and then switching to arty hunt. Sometimes the MM was harsh, but most of the times I was in T5-7 battles and in rare cases I was top tank. The mini-derp gun was decent and got the job done. The Chaffee and M7 are really fun tanks and worth the M5 grind.

One of the worst tanks I've played. The grind to elite is just crazy.

Got this tank yesterday. M3 Stuart was quite nice play but M5 i have no idea how to approach. Passive scouting i wouldn't mind but i do something wrong because it simply doesn't work for me. I think i do get the principle on how camo works and stuff but i get insta-popped every time finger off the trigger or not.
It's going to be long way to M24...

Howitzer.
But unless you are lucky, you're better off not shooting at all (play silent scout)
