British prime minister David Cameron lands in the Gulf today on a highly embarrassing mission to sell weapons to repressive regimes. Cameron is there to try to persuade the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia to buy more than 100 Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets.
The deals could be worth more than £6bn to the UK – and are yet another example of the lucrative trade ties that have muted criticism of these autocracies from Britain and its allies.

While the UAE has been busy arresting people for their political beliefs – and accusing anyone who questions this of "condescending monologues" – Saudi Arabia has issued a thinly veiled threat to punish Britain for a timid parliamentary inquiry into the UK's relationship with Saudi Arabia and Bahrain. (As well as silencing dissent at home, Saudi has helped crush the democratic uprisings in Bahrain, and has used its diplomatic clout to silence criticism of its smaller neighbour.)

That message seems to be getting through. Check out this infographic from the Guardian, detailing Cameron's trip around the Gulf, and the motives behind his visits:
