After 7000 battles I finally decided to quit. I decided that there really is no point in continuing to play - and in the middle of the holiday special at that!

This game makes me frustrated. It makes me angry. It absolutely infuriates me sometimes. And ultimately, that’s the reason I stopped playing. It took a long time for me to understand that, when I sat down thinking “I’m going to enjoy myself with this game”, I end up shouting in frustration, cussing, and generally being in a much worse mood than when I started.

I wanted to pinpoint exactly what was causing this, and some factors have been echoed elsewhere, and other factors have not. However, let me start with what is good about the game.
1. Free to play that actually works. I’ve never spent a dime on this game, I’ve reached tier 10 twice, and I have almost every tank up to tier 6-7. I don’t feel I need to pay to play, and certainly not to win.
2. Cheating doesn’t really exist as far as I know
3. Nations seem pretty well balanced. There are no invincible tanks or unfair tanks IMHO.
4. I instantly get into a match

Then for the bad…

The lottery
Easily the biggest problem of this game is the feeling that it’s a lottery posing as a game. What do I mean by that?

1. The feeling of not being able to influence the match. You can play as well as you want. You can have 10 kills and it doesn’t matter if your team is terrible. Likewise, you can sit in a bush and do nothing for the entire round, and the team will still win or lose with or without you. So who wins the match boils down to who draws the best team – a lottery. The feeling that you simply do not matter is not conducive to good gameplay.

2. Penetration and damage lottery. This goes without saying. I don’t want to win because the game arbitrarily decides I should have 25 % increased penetration on my gun, and I don’t want to zero-pen twice, miss once, bounce and THEN hit for damage. It feels like the game says “sorry, guess it’s the other team’s turn to win this round”, and it just infuriates me. I want to play the game, I don’t want the game to play me.

Tanks are not different enough between classes and nations
I feel this is the second biggest problem with the game. In the last year, a lot of tanks have been introduced. As a consequence, WAY too many tanks feel exactly the same to play. There was a time where you could really feel the difference between driving the Soviet brawlers with great alpha damage vs the more heavily armoured, sniping German tanks. I don’t feel any of that today. I think it has finally become apparent that the tanks are essentially just reskins of each other, which takes less time to make and makes Wargaming more money. But the French tanks with autoloading system shows that Wargaming can do better. You actually have to adapt to new tactics both when using and facing autoloader tanks, which makes the game more exciting! As opposed to lately: “You should play this tank, which has SLIGHTLY more armour and speed but less penetration than the tanks you already have.” No thanks game, I’m good. Just give me something that PLAYS differently, not just has different stats. Shotgun tanks with SPG cannons anyone? Also, tank classes seem to have lost any meaning. Lights that play like meds, meds that play like heavies, heavies that play like meds.

Bad community?
I’ll just say it. I think World of Tanks has a bad community. Not really in the forums, but when I play the game. What disturbs me the most is the blatant nationalism and racism that is sometimes displayed by players in game, case in point the disparaging views on Polish players (seen especially during the Polish special). Unfortunately, I think this is a European problem more than a World of Tanks-problem, and therefore it won’t get better anytime soon.
As big of a problem is the language barrier. You can try to coordinate and communicate as much as you want, but it doesn’t matter. Either people don’t speak English, or they can’t be bothered to respond. I’m sick of it. In a game as slow and methodical as World of Tanks (compared to say Counter Strike or Battlefield), this really hurts the experience.

The maps
I get that it would screw up balance to be able to choose maps, artillery would only choose big open maps, and fast tanks would choose city maps, but… I don’t care. I want to have fun. And the game doesn’t let me. I always, ALWAYS have fun on Himmelsdorf and Ensk, even as SPG. I never have fun on Redshire, Arctic region, Dragon ridge, El Halluf, Karelia. Why? Because they are slow, they encourage static play and camping, and because it simply doesn’t pay off to be the first guy moving in to attack. The guy that tires of camping first is the guy that dies. What causes this problem is the fact that there are only a handful of routes between bases, usually west, middle and east. They essentially act as tunnels, and you essentially fight whoever chose the same tunnel as you. Which leads me to another gripe with this game…

The game needs to reward aggressive play
Imagine how exciting the game would be, if it was actually like the trailers where several tanks swerve and dodge around each other trying get in that crucial shot. This happens sometimes, fine, but not NEARLY enough. Those are the moments I have fun, and those moments are too few and far between. If the trailers actually showed how gameplay truly was, it would show a tank sitting in a bush for three minutes waiting for some hapless attacker. Or being shot trying to move up the aforementioned west, middle or east “tunnels”, simply because you’re trying to make SOMETHING happen.

Lack of different game modes
This has also been done to death, but it needs to be said. Some maps got a lot better with encounter battles instead of standard battles (eg. Malinovka and El Halluf)... but it’s not nearly enough. Where are the escort missions? Co-op? Hell, why not just implement several bases, it would turn the game upside down and make everything exciting again, and all you’d have to do is copy paste the flag a few times! Give 200 XP for taking checkpoints (not bases) in cities for instance, it would make the game a ton of fun.

Lack of progression / too steep XP requirements.
I think this goes without saying, everyone wants their toys faster. But XP-requirements can be adjusted down slightly I think.

I hope World of Battleships will be great, and that Wargaming will learn from their mistakes. They have a unique opportunity to make a naval warship game, which hasn’t really been done well since Battlestations: Midway.

I made this topic to create a healthy discussion about the game, so I can one last time be constructive here. I ask that you please respect that and don’t troll.

So have a merry Christmas, and a happy new year.

I agree with a lot of things you say here OP.
Take a break if you need it (you may never know when you come back). I took 2x 6 months break in 2 years and it was very good for my sanity, soon I'll take my 3rd break again.

Good luck and Happy Holidays, where ever you go and do.

Problem is still noobs/afk players in team. I can tell you that year 2012 is worst on wot with lot more noobs and totally unexperience noobs using prem tanks making a whole team sick. Truth is more noobs buy wot account from other players with heavier tiers. Platoon is creating more noobs in team.

Define learn to play?

Finding a special tank type, that when played just about perfect, has great influence on the outcome of most battles?

WOT doesn't need players that shout, swear and blame other players.    If you rage at this game, you will rage at other games awell, if you don't enjoy the game then don't play.

Options I see for you...

1. Stop playing and never play again.
2. Play only tank companies and clan wars.
3. Seek help for your angry.

If you're one of those chilled and don't give a damn persons, actually you have a problem, because you're not the competitive type, in a game that it's about competition = winning.

When a competitive player wins he get joy from it, when he loses he feels miserable, but since you say you are different, what's your reason for playing?

For example I play for my tanks and to win with them, if I don't win just seeing my tank on the battlefield is not enough to make me happy. I need to win to be happy or if I lose at least do it in (epic) style.
