The BBC has recently aired the series "tankies"

It tells the story of 6 tankers from the the 5th Royal tank regiment, who formed part of the famous 7th armor division: the "desert rats".

It's a 2 part documentary and really shows how superior the German tanks and tactics were in the early stages of the war.

The First part focuses on the fall of France and the North Africa Campaign. It focuses less on the combat but more on the struggles of the men. The British tanks were under gunned, poorly armored and worst of all unreliable. In some cases, over 80% of the A13's broke down before making it to battle.
One historian says: "Rommel didn't need to be good, when the British were this bad"
As a Brit, it pains me to admit, but it was true.

5RTR started the war driving A13's, and were then transferred to M3 Stuarts (or Honey's) and M3 Lee's (Grants). Britain couldn't produce enough Crusaders, matilda's and valentine's and so relied heavily on Lend lease vehicles from the US.

The link to part 1 for anyone interested:

Part 2:

I'm not sure if the link will work for those without a British IP address. Hopefully it does.
If not, let me know and I'll see if I can find it on youtube or something.

It was quite good and went into a lot of detail yet I think would have been better for the BBC to make more episodes and programmes on Tanks as tank programmes are very rare

Was well worth the watch last night.

However, didn't like how they kept showing film of Matildas and Crusaders but never actually mentioned these tanks at all.

agreed, i kept waiting for them to do so but it never happened.
No mention of the Crusader, during operation "Crusader". just like WG in their special  :Smile_sceptic:

To be fair to them though, 5RTR almost exclusively used lend lease vehicles throughout the war.
