So I was wondering after watching Girls und Panzer, if modifying tanks in WoTs would be more than the upgrades in the tree? Like the current PZ4 being able to add the side skirt spaced armor that a variant had.(sorry cant remember its proper name).

As there was many versions of panzers and other tanks, it would be nice to be able to use a wide variety of models of a tank, ofcourse adding spaced armor would add mass to a tank reducing its speed. So it would make it interesting to have for example a Pz4 as standard but be able to buy like the ausf G/H as a slight upgrade.

I know the germans had a habit of sticking spaced armor on their vehicles so it'd be nice to be able to buy such upgrades whether through gold or silver.

The PzIV isnt the only tank that "evolved" through many different and distinguishable versions. The PzIIIs and StuGIIIs also had the side skirts (Schürzen they are called) in later versions, aswell as the Panther, mainly to repel soviet AT rifles like the PTRD, but it proved to repel HEAT based weapons just as well. The T-28 got gradually uparmored from 30mm to in the end afaik 80mm. Many KV-1 tanks were uparmored with applique armor plates on the turret sides, aswell as T-34s putting on improvised wire mesh as an attempt to repel the HEAT-based AT weapons like the Panzerfaust and Panzerschreck. Shermans were very often adding weight to their tanks by adding sandbags to the frontal armor (it didnt actually help much so i purposely didnt say "uparmored").

There are just dozens of these kinds of evolutions of tank models, mostly upgunning and uparmoring though, would still be nice to have add-on armor e.g. skirts/Schürzen.

I admit I got the PzKpfw IV Schmalturm just for the skirts-look, though they look like mesh instead of metal.

Aye i realized that alot of tanks got up-armored and modified in other ways just the pz4 came to mind from the anime(which i hope there will be a 2nd series) but I was thinking of  buying the PzKpfw IV Schmalturm but i dont want to spend gold on a tank that isnt set up how Id like, sort of like the prem with its Schürzen but the standard turret of the new Pz4

T-34/85 also had side skirts in WWII, though I think they failed at their job

I am guessing that was mostly to protect against rifle grenades and molotovs

No, same like German, also Russian tanks used skirts made of wire to protect against HEAT shells from infantry anti tank weapons.

I guess it would be more like...
Spoiler
:P

Also OP mentions the possibility to buy this stuff for credits/gold. So it's visible for everyone, not some re-skin/mod, visible only for one player.

Aye the idea was for everyone to be able to mod their tanks such as the STuG and JagdPanther in the top so everyone could see a difference in preference to players style. And ofcourse having the ability to drastically alter the looks like in Girls Und Panzer would add even more uniqueness and colourful battle fields

I was actually thinking that too when playing a match on my Churchill VII yesterday, which has pieces of track stuck to the turret. It would be interesting if stuff like that were upgrades you could actually buy, instead of them being on a tank by default. That way people could customize their tanks after their own liking.

First sorry been away busy with college and work.
YES! exactly, rather than standard tanks and camo's let the players design and implement their own, have them upload to their personal area server side, and give them an option to let others use it, thus more customization and personal touches can be added to the game that aren't limited to WG's creativity. Ofcourse there would need to be a content filter so extremly rude and graphical ideas and images are not shown.
