The link takes you to a wonderful program about explosions and this section deals with shaped charges. And the gold ammo link...
After Desert Storm there were rumours of RPGs using gold cones to punch through the amour of the M1A1 MBT. There were "eye witnesses" who saw bright yellow lances piercing the sides of the tanks. It was proposed that such RP Grenades would cost $500K a piece but this was peanuts compared to the price of a new tank. Gold was used because of its density and (relatively) cheap availability.
So as WG would say "Gold rounds are historical"  :trollface:

Needless to say I like conspiracy theories...Elvis prolly invented it with his friend Big Foot.

But lead is almost as dense and MUCH cheaper...
