So I finally got around going through the huge archive ( http://sa-kuva.fi/ ) of previously unreleased photos from the Winter and Continuation wars and thought some of them might be of interest to tank and history nerds like myself. Some of the photos are rather grisly, showing dead crew members hanging from hatches etc., but I chose not to include any of those in these examples.

A captured and repaired light tank during the Winter War. Can someone identify this tank for me? Not sure if I've ever seen one before.

A captured T-28, Winter War.

A Soviet BT-tank drove into a mine.
Posted Image

A knocked out BA-10 armoured car.
Posted Image

Apparently this T-28 drove over trees and rocks in the forest until it got stuck and abandoned.
Posted Image

A previously captured T-26 mod. 1931 stuck in the mud. Continuation War, 1941.
Posted Image:

A German Panzer III in Finland. Continuation War, 1942.
Posted Image

Thought this was the same Panzer III first, but it has 8 road-wheels instead of 6, making it the Ausf C model (thanks to laama for pointing that out).
Posted Image

A Finnish StuG III being repaired by its crew and "mascot".
Posted Image

A captured T-34 in Finnish markings, looks like the improved 1942 model.
Posted Image

A recently captured T-34-85.
Posted Image

ISU-152, destroyed with a Panzerfaust.
Posted Image

Was this damage caused by an internal explosion?
Posted Image

Demonstrating where the Panzerfaust was fired from.

So there, hope you enjoyed them.

+1 Very cool thanks for sharing. How were Soviet tanks "captured"? I thought they were allies in WWII?

Or was it a case of you country 'borrowed' them?

By captured I mean more or less intact Soviet tanks that fell into Finnish hands by various reasons and were later put to use against their former owners. Some of the captured Soviet tanks were immobilized (but not destroyed) by Finnish troops during battle, and some got accidentally stuck while maneuvering, like in the fifth picture.

Not sure what you mean by "I thought they were allies in WWII?". Finland and Soviet Union were enemies during most of the Second World War. You can check Wikipedia for "Winter War", "Continuation War" and "Lapland War" if you want more info on this topic.

edit: Oh and you're welcome, glad you liked them. :)

I did read of a raid that Finnish soldiers made on a camp of Russians, they literally drove off with their tanks. Very brave men.

A second photo of the same tank. Can someone tell me the exact model?
Posted Image

I'm pretty sure that it's a Panzer III Ausf C and it's not same tank as the previous one. Look at the amount of wheels.

The second unknown tank, with two turrets, looks to be a T-26 light tank (not the other T-26 that's in-game).

Hot damn, looks like you are correct. Didn't notice the difference with the wheels. Also the number on the tanks seem to be different now that I pay closer attention to it. So the tank with more wheels might actually be an early short-barreled Panzer IV, as IV had eight wheels instead of six like the Panzer III had (had to check Google to make that comparison).

Anyway, thanks for pointing that out, I'll correct the descriptions accordingly.

After a quick search it seems that you are correct, looks like a T-26 mod. 1931. Heh, that's some pretty vintage pre-war Soviet stuff still being used by the Finns during the Continuation War.

It's not a Panzer 4, that's not the right suspension, gun or turret. It's a Panzer 3 ausf C as mentioned, and you can see the same image discussed here and confirmed as a C:

Ugh, shows what I know. To be honest I did think the gun doesn't look like a short 75mm, but I also didn't realize Panzer III's came with 8 road-wheels as well.

I wasn't aware of that one before either, but it seems there was only 15 made, so pics of them aren't common.
