Try to find this in the wiki, but couldn't find it.

So, what is gun depression? How does it work, or... not work?

Well, depression is the opposite to elevation, tanks like the IS have almost no depression, the M4 Sherman has a very good depression.
My english isn't that good, I'll try to explain it like this;

-Elevation: shot in the sky
-Depression; shot on the ground

Elevation Arc.

Depression is how much you can lower your gun.
Elevation is how much you can rise your gun.

For example KV-1 can lower it's gun by -7° ( Depression ) and it can rise it by +25° ( elevation ).

Has thought that also. Not sure.
1)I think it is how high/low your gun is installed. Why this matters? Because the higher your gun is the less you expose yourself. But you also lose guns movements/elevation so it limits how high low you can aim/shoot.

How much you can move the gun down. Measured in degrees from the horizontal plane.

Well it it either a measure of the ability for the gun to point downwards relative to the tanks hull...(Image 2)

Or

It is dicovering that the gun you have isn't up to the job and you can't afford the upgrade.  Which causes depression. (Image 3)

Edited to add diagrams and emphasis that depression is always relative to the tanks hull. Not to horizontal.

My 2p, When a tank's gun has good depression it can point downhill & uphill well :?

So an M4 easy 8 can reach more targets than a Churchill on the vertical plane.

Hope that helps & is accurate enough!

Gun Elevation - The gun's maximum angle above horizontal (i.e. aiming up).
Gun Depression - The gun's maximum angle below horizontal (i.e. aiming down).

Many american tanks have good gun depression, this means you can peek over a hill with just your turret showing to the enemy and take a shot down the far side of a slope.
German tanks have poor gun depression, meaning that they cannot peek and shoot down the far side of a hill without going over the top of the hill and showing their lower hull, so they will take a lot of damage trying to peek and shoot on hills.

Gun depression is just like human depression. When things do not go well we get unhappy, or, depressed. Now, when a gun hits its target but has 0 damage, it suffers from Gun Depression.
