Pretty basic Poll and it's for everyone, and for those who don't know the difference between Standard and Bullpup weapons I'll post some images at the bottom.

Standard Rifle and Machinegun:
Spoiler
Bullpup Rifle and Machinegun:
Spoiler
Note the position of the Magazine and trigger.. Bullpup weapons generally have the Magazine and firing mechanism in the back of the weapon were as Standard weapons will have the Magazine and firing mechanism in the center of the weapon. But which do you prefer?

Bullpup can be difficult to get used to if you're used to regular magasine position. And this may cost your life when under pressure. Anyway I'd take anything that fires a bullet, and especially if it's bigger than .22

I'm not a big fan of revolvers though.

When I was in the Army we used a bullpup design rifle (Steyr AUG) and i kinda liked it. Accuracy of a normal rifle due to the standard barrel length but easier to handle as the overall weapon is shorter
I go for the bullpup

An SMG can still be called a Machinegun technically

technically, usually however, machinegun is used for the kind of weapons for support like mg42, m249 saw or PKM

True, but P-90s, AKS-74U and guns like that are still classed as Machineguns.

Depending of the shell type(mostly) we classify them(in Bulgaria) as follows:

Автомати/ Щурмови винтовки (Assault rifles) : AKM, AK-74, G-36, SA-80, M-16, Steyr AUG, FAMAS - they use rifle calibers like the 7,62x39

Картечни пистолети (Literally machine gun pistols or SMGs) : H&K MP5, Karl Gustav, Steyr AUG (it had a posibillity to fire pistol rounds by changing the barrel i think), Ingram Mac 10 - they all use pistol rounds like the 9x19 parabellum

Картечници (Machine guns) : PK, PKM, PKT, MG 34-42-3, M-60, SAW - they mostly fire larger rounds although some like the PK/PKM use rifle shells in this case the 7,62x54 that's also used in the Mosin rifle and the Dragunov semi automatic sniper rifle.

Those are the basic categorries we use here I guess (excluding handguns)

wikipedia said:

Submachine guns are hand-held small portable automatic weapons for personal defense or short-range combat firing pistol-caliber rounds. A machine gun is often portable to a certain degree, but is generally used when attached to a mount or fired from the ground on a bipod, and generally fires a rifle cartridge.

P-90 uses pistol ammo and therefore is a submachine gun, and the 74u is in between an assault rifle and a submachinegun

AKS-74 is a SMG variant of the AK-74

Also SMG is a Sub-Machinegun

It's still a machinegun

The 74-u/ AKS-74 is a regular assault rifle in everything but it's size. So I guess it's just a small assault rifle  :smiles:

AKS-74 is a Hybrid, to be technical, it's a Machine Gun that fires Rifle sized rounds.

is it really that hard?

machine gun=fires full sized rifle ammo in full auto
submachine gun=fires pistol ammo full auto
assault rifle=fires ammo that is slightly smaller than rifle ammo, but bigger than pistol ammo to have something that is like a rifle but can also fire full auto much more controlled than a machine gun firing fullsized rifle ammo.

so: AK-47: fires 7.62x39mm, basically a shorter rifle round=assault rifle
P-90: fires pistol ammo=submachine gun

It's a matter of opinion and this argument can go on forever, also some Assault Rifles will fire Rifle Rounds which are around 7.62mm

It's in the word's etimology.

Submachinegun - the part Sub probably comes from latin and means "under" or "bellow" so the Submarine moves under the marina(sea)

Submachineguns are something that is located in classification bellow the machine guns.

Assault rifles would have been that, but they appeared much later than SMGs and the title was already taken.

That's all more of a linguistical discussion than a weapons one.

Sub-Machineguns still fall into the category of Machinegun.

OK, as you wish. Whatever we call them doesnt change their characteristics and lethality. Doesnt matter if i say that a H&K MP5 is a banana for example. That banana still fires 9x19s and kills people.
