How do I record my battles and where do I view them?

1) I pressed the battle record in settings but nothing else happened. what went wrong?
2) where can I view the recordings once I have recorded them?

Go in World Of Tanks folder (where you install it) and go in reply folder and you will see your battles. Also you need to exit game and then press reply.

I must be either reading things wrong or it is not working, but then again I am a bit of a computer biff.

Did you find replay files in folder "replays"?
There should be files with extension wotreplay. Just doubleclick a file. If nothing happens, select program to run it. It should be WorldOfTanks.exe i folder where you installed game.
You can do it manually: right click on file -> Open with -> Browse -> find and select "WorldOfTanks.exe".

Do I click on the WoT icon to start the game, go through the start menu and go through the drop down link or where because I have not got a clue.

You installed the game, right? Don't you remember where you installed it to?
Well, probably you used the default install path, which is:
c:\games\worldoftanks\

So, you may find it there.

I found the replay file but when I try to play them all I get is "The Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file."  How can I fix this?

That sounds like you are trying to open that with a video player, which won't work. The replay files are not videos, they are like a transcript of the battle which the game uses to re-enact the battle.

What you need to do:
1. Close World of Tanks completely.
2. Doubleclick a replay file
It should open with World of Tanks now and replay the battle.
