Putin has his own way of diverting Russians' attention from current economic problems, and it is nationalism and xenophobia. Their government has been supporting violent nationalists' groups that make a lot of noise just to convince people that other countries are to blame for their crisis - income gap, alcoholism, poverty, population decline. I bet normal Russians think just as you do.

Well, I think it's in their education in schools and in family.
The germans there are the bad guys (well, not really off the point) who defiled their great Mother Russia.

I have witnessed anti German sentiments in Crete so it is not impossible to imagine that feelings run as deep in Russia.

You correctly point out that it was not you or probably your parents generation that was responsible but it may be that it is associated indelibly with your national psyche in so far as you may be considered a nation which is capable of such things.

For my own part I have always found Germans most hospitable whilst in Germany.

Don't forget for years Germany was the front line in the Cold War.  East vs West. and all that.

I would say the dislike is inversly proportional to education.

It would be like asking Germans if they hate turkish people.

I knew some Russian exchange students, a couple of them had chosen German language in school because "we respect their culture and music etc." They were just speaking for themselves, of course.
I think they were talking about the era of Bach, Beethoven, the German philosophers etc.

No, russians dont hate germans. If they did, it would be like saying german still hate jews.
Btw, there are 10000's of russians living in Germany.  And Russia has very close business relationships with Germany. And ofc Rammstein, how can they hate them........
If Putin is trying to bully Merkel, it does not mean russian ppl will hate germany :teethhappy:
