You'r using last gun upgrade? With earlier guns I can agree but last one can kill KV-3 and damages most stuff without problem unless shooting from unfavorable angle.

IMO, the imba 85mm is too costly if you don't want to spend more time than necessary in this hunk o' junk.

Even with stretching history to the extreme with handling characteristics and gun choices this tank just feels awful. It feels like it is made out of glass and tracks. The acceleration and the turning characteristics can be your worst enemy at times, when you find yourself racing in front of your team, the one place where you definitely shouldn't be in this tank.

I'd say get the first 57mm gun and then go for the KV.

I finally got the 85mm gun and must say its like a different tank. Well, no its still paper thin, and you cant take anything head on really as you will generally go down.... but you can at least do some serious damage with this gun making the grind a lot lot less painful. My best so far is 3 kills.
If it wasnt for this gun I would have definitely abandoned this line.
Moral of this story is you must get the 85mm or the grind really is to much to bare.

To get there (to the 85mm) I upgraded the following as fast as I could:

Crew
Commander 75%
Gunner 75%
Driver 75%

Everything researched except for the 57mm Zis-4 (no plans to use it)

I started off with the basic tank and crew. It is a truly awful experience
but as I have no gold I had no option but to go the hard slog

AT the point of installing the 85mm  all my crew had risen
with Commander, gunner, and driver at 79% and the rest at 64%.
There is obviously a a big difference in the tank (for the better)

One last thing:  EXP earned on this tank sis pretty low. Surviving isnt enough.
You need a couple of kills or you will generally stay at around 150xp earned
per game. But getting a couple of kills even with the 85mm is easier said than done.

85mm makes this tank nothing more than usable...

I'm surprised noone mentioned 3 second aiming time on that bad boy. C'on even 107mm and 100mm aim faster. This is the problem, especially with 60% skill crew.

The T-28 is a true glass cannon, for it's tier it gets pretty good weapons from the sniper machine that is the 57mm ZiS-4 and the powerful 85mm. Never rely on your personal armour, other tanks, rocks, buildings, and tank corpses all make great cover. Also try to limit your huge side profile by making sure the front of the tank is always pointing the direction you are expecting incoming fire.

Personally I preferred the 57mm, it is highly accurate allowing you to engage targets from far away and it also has higher penetration and damage per minute than the 76mm and the 85mm.

The problem you people have is that you get impressed by the 85mm gun. It's a dog. Slow, inaccurate and not just that big punch TBH. And a big XP investment. What you REALLY want is the Zis-4 57mm gun. Fast, very accurate, much cheaper on XP. It also kills 85mm F-30 on DPS and has only slightly worse penetration. Previous 57mm gun is very heap and not bad either.

T-28 otherwise being crap it's not as much fun as T-34-57 but you can do decent damage with tank school gunner + loader (and a driver).  Perfect for Sniping targets of opportunity who will be going WTFBBQ when they get shelled every 4 seconds! :Smile-playing:

To be honest, the T-28 is a fun tank, even with the paper thin armor.

Both guns are really nice but have different uses. The 57mm gun is awesome for sniping (good penetration, decent damage, excellent accuracy ) and excels in wide open maps but lacks the firepower required for close combat. The 85mm gun has good damage, good penetration and good accuracy and it's a little better overall as in close combat as you pack a bigger punch.

Overall, it comes down to personal preference, what do you want ? If you want to snipe and excel at sniping, go with the 57mm gun, if you want to snipe and have a good chance of surviving in close combat, go for the 85mm gun.

I like the T28 but I prefer  Zis-4 57mm gun.
Nice ROF, nice accuracy, suitable for sniping.
A little money maker so far.

yes I agree but everything to do with this tank is a big investment (especially if your playing for free like me.
I had to spend credit to get the first three members of the crew up to 75% as I couldnt bare how bad the stock tank
was. And of course I had to upgrade everything. It requires effort to get this tank up to a playable level

I hadn't considered the Zis so after reading what you said I got one.
Both guns have their place but for sure the ZIS is much more accurate
and I like it.

All said and done though the tank is crap in terms of armour and the fact that no one ever seems to miss you  :Smile-playing:
Its like a glass building on wheels...in the middle of a battle field.

Well, I managed to grind the T-28 without getting any other gun besides the stock gun. I am in a little minus with the win-loss ratio on it (7 battles, but it was balanced before) so I'm pretty pleased with how it fared. Not that I did a lot good, though.  :Smile_harp:

It was a bit painful, since those losses were pretty much the most recent battles I fought (got about 10 losses and 2 wins in my 12 last battles in the T-28)

Now I sold it and got the KV.  :Smile_honoring:

Strange tank indeed!  Paper armour, 85mm is really a great gun, it is fast-ish, big as house.

Question:- Is the conical turret worth any more hit points?  It just seems a total waste of 1k XP for 20m more view with 500kg more weight!  If there are HP to be had I'll do it otherwise I'll save the XP towards the KV.

Thanks.

It gives about... 30HP, how I remember. It's actually nothing special if you don't want another gun or similar. I researched and bought it thinking I'd get a new gun, but eventually I stuck with the stock one.

The "conical" bit is also a giveaway that the armor is angled a bit more usefully on it.

My greatest achevement in T-28 so far (just bought the 57mm ZiS-4 gun, it was its first game)
Posted Image

I'm starting to like this tank. Dunno if I really want to waste time getting the 85mm, if the gun performs as it did, I guess I'll just grind towards KV. What pleasantly surprised me was that I managed to take the 60% M3 Lee with one shot. A new experience, after almost 100 battles in T-46 (most with the 76,2mm gun) and around 20 T-28 battles.

Honestly? The worst tank in my garage so far is SU-76. What makes me sick is not grinding through T-28. It's grinding through SU-76 and SU-85B, with no even less armour than in T-28 and the gun too weak for the tier (What does SU-76 with 76,2mm gun against Pz-IV? "Bounced off!" <_< )

It's a good tank. I don't know how any of you play, but I actually quite like this little tin can. Sure, it's armour is made of wet tissue paper (and it seems to be very easy to hit the fuel tank, or is that just my very poor driving?) but there are a few rules to this tank.

1. Don't get into CQC. YOU. WILL. DIE.

2. Try and use cover as much as possible. Your armour isn't much. Get something in between it and the enemy, and you'll be fine. Until the cover breaks.

3. Use the fast-firing ZiS-4. It reloads as if it's on speed. The 85 is fine, but if you can't shoot straight, use the ZiS-4.

4. Get your crew to 75+% It really, really helps.

Hope that was of some use.

-Legion

(By the way, don't check my account. It hasn't got my T-28 stats up yet for some reason.)

I was very disappointed with the T28, it felt like a major downgrade that we must endure before we can get our KV's. It's a paper coffin on tracks

The main problem with this tank is its crappy gun, you have to upgrade to the better 76mm and then work up to that 85mm. Once you get the 85, it suddenly becomes the best tank on the field when you're with lower tiers and is capable of whittling down heavies from a distance.

Its second biggest problem is the armor, and you have to fight smart to get around that, stick to heavies and fire from a distance when you're in a high tier battle.

Once I got that 85, the tank suddenly became quite fun to play, it was especially satisfying to kill a T29 with it... ;)
