Hello! Now that WG has finally announced the upcoming 7on7 gamemode called "Team Battles", I decided to write a short guide about 7on7 format to those who aren't familiar with it.
Basic rules:
- Teams consist of 7 players. (can be played with 5 or 6 but that's not a good idea)
- 42 tierpoints total (tiers of all 7 tanks added together)
- Maximum tier is 8
- Battle time 10 minutes
I'm not sure if this rule is going to be implemented in the upcoming Team Battles, but I'm going write it here anyway because it is used in all 7on7 tournaments:
- If the battle ends in a draw, the team with 8 or more tierpoints advantage wins. If there is no 8 tierpoints difference, it is a draw.
How to use 42 tierpoints?
At this point smartest guys have figured out that you cant play with 7x tier 8 tanks. No, you are not supposed to play with 7x tier 6 tanks either. (unless you got TOGs, they are awesome) Nowadays the most common setups in WoT eSports consist of 5x tier 8 tanks and 2x tier 1 tanks. For example, in Himmelsdorf you could use 3x IS-3, 2x AMX 50 100 and 2x T1 Cunninghams.
Low tier arties were used a lot in open maps before the massive arty nerf. I don't know how much they are going to buff those arties in the next patch, but currently they are useless. So, I'm not going to introduce other setups than 5x T8 + 2x T1 now.
So, what tanks should I use in this mode?
For citymaps these tanks are the most common:
  • IS-3
  • T32 (not as popular as IS-3)
  • AMX 50 100
  • T69 (not used that much anymore after penetration nerf)
  • 2 Cunninghams
And for open maps:
  • AMX 13 90
  • T69
  • Pershing
  • AMX 50 100
  • 2 Cunninghams
I have picked the tanks, what kind of strategies should we use to win?
Not the same tactics as in random battles. In random battles/tank comanies you can split tanks to almost every area of the map, because you have so many of them. In 7on7 you have only 5 big tanks. You should keep those near eachother and scout the other areas with Cunninghams. Of course there are many different strategies and you can win with many different ways - but I'm not going to tell about all of them.
To learn more about strategies and setups, you should watch VoDs or streams from WoT Pro League or other tournaments.
Please note that this gamemode is not just about initial strategies, but reacting to the enemy movements.

I'm not really familiar with ESL,  even though I've watched them a bit , so why Pershing for open maps ? ( sort of faster version of T32 compromise thing ? )

Well, SPALE hasn't tried pershing in a long time but we see other teams picking those nowadays. They are like T69s without autoloader, and also have a strong turret. Anyway we haven't played with it so can't say much about it's advantages.

TOG with "Agility" and "Hit and run" inscriptions is the best choice.

Its a very versatile tank, got 268 pen on gold shells, insane gun depression, good amount of hitpoints, just a great allrounder imo.

Caernarvon's could work, good pen, good hull down, like the Pershing. Probably better turret hull down. Also more accurate and quicker settle time.

But pershing is used because of it's speed. If you dont want to move and would like to use hulldown positions, T32 is the best choice. Caernarvon doesn't really fit into this format because of it's low alpha damage and not-so-spectacular movement speed.

Good read :).

I think that once 7v7 team battles become available for the masses, the metagame formed by the high-end eSports teams (whom already did 7v7) might get influenced in a bottom-up sense because of it! For one, I'm sure we'll see all sorts of tanks, including TD's. Some might proof to work ;)

And what about Tiger 2, Indien-Panzer and other tanks? Non-ESL 7on7 matches are played without gold ammo IMHO, armor and penetration make role there. I think in these matches will be other setups than in ESL matches. But correct me, if I'm wrong :)

And they are APCR instead of HEAT like on T69, making all the difference when fighting against IS-3's for ex. That big [edited]gun mantlet can hold off pretty much anything you can throw at it. +it gets max view range quite easily.
