The Game: Wee War @ http://weewar.com/

The Map:

What Is Wee War? Best described (in my opinion) as a cross between Diplomacy and Risk, Wee War is a free, turn-based, strategy game that, at least on a map such as this, requires equal parts diplomatic cunning and strategic nous. Turns are taken sequentially with a 12 hour time limit per turn. This places a maximum of 60 hours between turns but with reasonably active players 1 turn per day is more common and ideally you should be prepared to put in about 20 minutes a day once the game gets going. The full game is likely to take a few months to complete. Unless you suck and die early.

How To Play:

Sign up at WeeWar.com. For now you automatically get a Pro Account (needed to use all units/maps etc) for free but EA technically owns the IP and intend a mobile release at some point so who knows if that will last.

Play through the tutorial. If it takes you longer than 50 turns to beat Zapp Brannigan (the AI) you should lobotomise yourself and try again.

If you think this is the kind of game you might enjoy tell me here and if 4 other people agree with you we can get started.

I'm also open to playing with less players or on a different map, suggestions are welcome but realistically the public map choice is somewhat limited. Although you could always make your own, if that tickles your fancy.

2months (orso) is a fair bit less than 20 years! You must be a youngin because back in the "good old days" we used to play Diplomacy by mail! Now that took a few years to play a game alright.

Quite recently (2011/2012) I participated in Play-by-Email game of Star Trader which took 18 months to finish, so I know what it feels like...

Looks quite neat, I'd give it a try if I didn't have 3 other games on the go.

...and yes it did need a general discussion advert.  I've been playing for a couple of years and this is the first time I have ventured in here.  No one's ever going to "find their way here"....

No, probably not :( The problem is there are so many serious and important threads on GD that the forum goons moderators need to maintain the very high standard. Ah well, can't win em all.

Looks interesting, but not something I'd personally invest time into. I'm only a bratty 16 Year old Brit for goodness sake! :veryhappy:

That's cool. I think the Irish Isles (we're renaming them) will do much better with Dublin as the capital anyway. Unless you'd care to try and stop us

Hey, this looks likes fun! I've always been a fan of turn-based games, mainly chess, but I rarely play them because I can never get around the stress that generally comes along with them: you have to think strategically and you have to be quick about it. But a game with up to 12hrs of allowed thinking time.. sounds perfect. Not that I will take those 12 hours to make a move :teethhappy:, but, yeah. Sign me up.

One question though. Where does the diplomacy come in in this game? There was nothing about it in the tutorial.

Awesome :) Only 4 more to go! Or if we can only rustle up 2 more we can go with a smaller map or something. There are some very nice 4 and 5 player maps too.

Anyway, the diplomacy is a naturally occuring element of the fact that it's a multiplayer empire game and so as often as not your chance to win is as much a product of politics as it is military genius. On the map above let's pretend that after some turns the Irish Isles and France/Spain  make an alliance to attack east. Meanwhile around the same time Germany and Turkey ally to divide up Italy who has over expanded early on. Russia is (purely anecdotally) being played by a paranoid schizophrenic who stacks arty 3 deep behind every infantry and never advances towards contested builds. In this scenario Italy is in deep trouble because he's facing enemies outproducing him 3 or 4 to 1. Unless he can out-politic some of his rivals and generate a backstab he will lose. The better he is a military commander the slower that will happen, but it will happen.

That's one of the reasons I chose the Europe map to showcase, it generates a lot of intrigue because it is, by nature of how Europe is shaped in reality, slightly unbalanced from a strict military standpoint. This gives rise to reward for risk calculations becoming almost a second currency as you negotiate with friend and foe alike. Historically this has caused a lot of trouble but in a computer game it's really fun :)

Example from some random game being played now after ~10 turns:

@ Pie Eater: I'm glad to see you've chosen an Irish Bulldog for your meme there. Yeah, that's right, we've renamed them too. And if you have a problem with that you know where to sign up!
