Why not? People could get the code from their clan mates, other forums etc.
Let's take me for example - there are more than 10 people that I can tell for sure that used this code only because I told them. They didn't see it here on forums or on official site. So, for me, it seems pretty legit that 100k codes were gone in ~3 hours.

Alienware which used to give out 8,000 codes for 1000 gold needed around 2 hours to give them all out. And that was simple.
100,000 people actually checking the article about E-sports, without any hint of a code in it doesn't seem realistic to me. Besides it was a QR code, not many people know or have the means to scan it and get the code.
I really can't prove anything but my experience leads me to believe that it's very unlikely for 100,000 people to have claimed it already.
