Update: One of most underperforming tier 9 tanks. Just my opinion tho. It has no armor(only beak in front and mantlet) other is overmatch or easy pen. Which would be OK if I wasn't heavy, I can't hold my own in M103. I really hope I can get used to it. I feel like T110E5 is a no-go after this tank.

Played a few games in this tank now and I have to say that I find it difficult getting used to. I got the second gun and suspension and radio and this made it much better. It is anyway quite different from any other heavy tank I played in wot before. I really like how it handles, it feels very nimble compared to other heavy tanks in wot but you cannot stop for more than a few seconds. If you do I find myself blown to bits in no time. Second part is what seems to haunt many american tanks is the noob stamp. Not seldom other players start even before game have started with "oh a f**k M103 noob" etc even if I several times walk out of the game with a fair score as top 3 in the team at the end the M103 seem to be a noob tank...

I really like the M103 despite all its quirks in armor and noob status. Primarily for its agility and the amazing gun (and I only have the T122 gun). I find that no one will run away from me when appearing at the battlefield, even if repeatedly have pulverized a number of IS-7 and E100 with my M103. It seems to have a por reputation by many. Personally I think it is a bit unfair and handled right it is a really good tank that can deal a lot of damage.

I re-bought the M103 tonight as I realised I was only 12k XP away from the top gun, and I've found tanks are often better the second time round. I have to say, I couldn't see much difference on paper between the two guns, a bit of accuracy and a bit more pen - but, I have found it transformational. Now, this is just 5 games in one night, but check the data:

With the T122 gun:

Map Tank Result WN8 Dmg Asst Frags Credits Net
Prokhorovka M103 WON 211 429 146 0 5,026 cr
Cliff M103 WON 2,469 2,545 332 1 15,556 cr

Then I researched the M58 (with a bit of free XP):

Map Tank Result WN8 Dmg Asst Frags Credits Net
Abbey M103 LOST 2,933 2,563 512 4 20,781 cr
Severogorsk M103 LOST 2,327 3,076 329 0 19,150 cr
Windstorm M103 WON 2,451 2,527 14 1 12,028 cr

Check out the damage, WN8 and net credits - clearly the accuracy and pen are much more significant than I thought.

You get immediate motivation from successfully penning the enemy tanks.

The armour on the M103 is not great, but the turret is fine front-on, so focus on using the tanks great acceleration to take opportunity shots against your enemies. And get that top gun!

I really hope this kind of form continues, if it does the M103 will become a favourite pretty quick.

Jock

I caved in and got myself the M58 gun. I have not made any nice stats like GeneralJock above but I have to give it a wow+ just based on feeling. It changes the M103 totally and just based on feeling it is definitely worth spending the 60 k on buying it. I found myself being able to send nice greeting cards to E75s and Tortoises pinpointing their week spots from quite a distance away and really do some damage. My very first battle with the M58 spit out 2150 damage. The only downside with this gun is that the tank it self feels a bit underpowered due to weight so I really want the bigger engine now.

Thing is, because I thought there was no major significant difference in the guns, I upgraded everything else first! So the gun was really the icing on the cake. I would seriously recommend the engine because it improves acceleration and lets you peek-a-boo in and out of cover much more effectively.

Amazing tank, even without engine and tracks. That gun is really great. Fast aiming, good accuracy, also on the move, 9,25 sec reload (bia/vents/rammer) for 400 damage. The turret is quite bouncy, but only if pointed straight to an enemy. The UFP bounces as well, but there are a lot of weakspots all over the front, above all the whole LFP. It's not an ST1 or E75 armorwise, but it is faster and outguns those tanks by far. Basically it's located somewhere between an ST1/E75 and the Conqueror. It has some armor and a very good gun, but none of them is the very best.

I have a new 100% crew for this tank that are getting some games in on the T14.  would you train all repair as first skill or mix in snapshot/smoothride or something?

My current setup. Although I might reset them someday for BiA or something.

6th sense and safe stowage are a must. Anything else is optional.

Also as I am starting with a new crew without safe stowage, should I equip a Wet ammo rack?

So Vstab/WetRack/Rammer?

Or Vstab/EGLD/WetRack as the first 120mm is slow aiming?

No I wouldn't equip wet rack, wet stowage is nice to have since it only cost one perk slot on the loader but it isn't worth it to use a equipment slot that you only have 3 off. Try to avoid taking lower plate hits and penetrating hits to you side armor and your ammorack shouldn't be much of an issue.

Vstab/rammer/Optics works pretty well but you could exchange the rammer or optics for GLD if you find the aim time to much.

Perhaps GLD until I get the top gun?

I have some class 3 vents in the depot if I need to.

GLD is a decent choice when using the first 120mm since it will the bring the aiming time to almost that of the upgraded 120mm and since the M103 armor is pretty bad now you want to limit your exposure time.

Thanks.   I might be able to give it a try on Saturday!     I will Free XP that gun but grind the turret or do you really need the turret?  I have about 150k freeXP but I'm very mean about it!

Just free exp the first 120mm and you can grind for everything else, the biggest difference with the second turret is 20m more view range but its armor is pretty comparable to the first turret.

OK I'm pretty sorted.   I'll give the crew full repairs, or possible gun skills on driver and gunner.

best tank i have purchased, along with JP 2, those two tanks are awesome, why didnt i get them sooner :( although only 3 battles with m103 so far, jesus, its good, aced it on 3rd battle, for now ~ 3k dpb, jp 2 has a bit less after first 10 battles, but thats cause i played it much more agressively, i only free xped first 120mm gun, and it works like a charm. or maybe its good that i got it just now so i wont ruin stats on it with scrub playstyle, like on e75, which was my first line i grinded and rushed it. still recovering, but it wont ever get as good as it should be, to reflect the best tier9 HT as it is. So far it seems like m103s and upcoming e5s playstyle is very nice for me, as it is jack of all trades, master of none, it looks like it works very well in wot enviroment as it is now :)
