Now, there's no way they can create enough exploration or story to keep you playing for thousands of hours, so they had to change the mechanics of the game, so players would instead keep doing the same actions over and over and over, whether they liked it or not. So game developers turned to Skinner's techniques.

This is a big source of controversy in the world of game design right now. Braid creator Jonathan Blow said Skinnerian game mechanics are a form of "exploitation." It's not that these games can't be fun. But they're designed to keep gamers subscribing during the periods when it's not fun, locking them into a repetitive slog using Skinner's manipulative system of carefully scheduled rewards.

Why would this work, when the "rewards" are just digital objects that don't actually exist? Well...

So you say that a video game company wants us to keep playing their video game?

No sh*t Sherlock.

But thats precisely the point, a lot of players say rigging!

Then people say conspiracy! because after all why would they rig it?

The rigging forms part of the skinner box mechanism. Which is why a lot of players slow on through huge loss streaks.

A lot of players are simply bad, that's why they're having huge loss streaks.

Consider this:

A crack dealer vs a motor vehicle manufacturer.

A crack dealer's unique selling point is non existent, they get you addicted and you buy (in this case play) due to psychological manipulation. Like the old cigarette joke, first one's free. This is rather than any inherent positive points, skinner boxes psychologically condition people to a 'desired behaviour'.

While lets say Honda I buy Honda because of the good points of Honda, they have to convince me to buy it in the first place, I gauge it against other bikes/cars I choose it because of affirmative reasons rather than tinkering with a persons psychology (advertising not withstanding).

Similar to cigarette smokers how many want to smoke?

Yet it can be said that there are far more people dependant on cars than crack.

Apply the game addiction theory to chess?

You can't say "advertising not withstanding".... that's half the point...

So... showing every bloke who drives/rides a Honda looking fit, chiselled with a six-pack and dressed nicely, with all the lovely ladies flirting with him, with the idea of making you think "Hmmm... if I buy a Honda that will be me..."

..is not "getting you addicted"... or at least something similar?

Because that is all the crack dealer is doing if he offers you a first freebie.... advertising his wares... "loss-leading"....

I gave up smoking years ago... I still WANT to smoke... I go past people smoking Bennies or Marlboros and think.."Mmmm... I want one!!!.GIMME!!!."..

....but my health tells me "no.. don't you f-king dare..."

I still want it....

And in case you didn't know.. ALL companies want you to keep coming back and buying their goods.. its how they survive... and make money.. and pay their staff.. who go and buy some other stuff....
