Everything was great until evening... Turned on one game and my amd drivers crashed (it said it stopped working). Turned off pc, after turning it on the effect was still the same, it differs in different windows, for example I can't see sh*t through all the flickering in boot menu. Please help. :( Tried few things - checked connection of cables, are they ok. (Yes they are) Rolled back windows and so on...  1400956891809.jpg

Yes, your shaders are effed up. Time for a new GPU.

Such a good news, I actually still can't believe it has happened.. So I can't do anything besides buying a new GPU ?

Correct. Defective shaders cannot be disabled because they could be spread over all control clusters.

Could you explain me a little bit about that "it could be spread over all clusters" part please?

Doesn't matter what he said, you can't disable shaders on your GPU. No tool for that. You can try to downclock your GPU once you manage to boot the system. Sometimes this helps. If you can't boot with this GPU, get an old or an inexpensive one, make it your primary GPU, boot with that and then downclock the defective GPU. If I remember correctly you can switch GPUs in Windows, mid session, you'll just have to move the monitor cable to the one you want to use.

Shaders are organized in clusters. So if you have for example 384 shaders, and they are in groups of 64 shaders per cluster, you got 6 clusters of 64 shaders each. If one single shader is defective, the other 63 in that cluster can't be used because the cluster tries to load-balance shader work and may use the defective one. So if you got at least 1 defective shader in each cluster, you can't use your GPU anymore and this can be the case.

That is why it's required to buy a new GPU right on the sign of shader defects.

Well my GPU is 6 years old (ATI Radeon HD 3870), I'm quite happy after all... :) Thanks for your replies, no more world of tanks for me for some time.  :/

Nothing worse than dead hardware.

Don't despair though? Grab a 2nd hand GPU on a free ads website for about €50? A hd 7770 or a low end GT will run this game.

That's only a week without beer and crisps?

Alternatively get the R7 240 for about 45 to 55€. It has as much shaders as your previous HD 3870 (320 shaders).

It might look like a waste of money, but it's okay for an interim solution if you only play WoT (You can save money later for a better GPU).

If like me your rather handy you could remove your cooling system and check the gpu board for defects such as burst capacitor and then buy and solder the replacement part. Ive kept 2 monitors running that way when others would have bought new. if its dead what do you have to lose?

I have spotted this GPU today, wanted to buy something like HD 7770 or HD 7750 but price difference compared to R7 is something I don't like. It seems like it's a quite good low budget GPU, and whats that all about shaders, how important are they? I can't really see anything about them in descriptions of GPU's. :}

Yes, I have already done that, I like to dig in things like those when I know I can't f**k things up anymore. :D It looks healthy

The shaders are where the (3D) graphics get computed, in small rectangular segments (which is why typical graphic errors caused by defective shaders look so striping or checkers board like) which then get merged to the big picture which is then sent to the display.

That is why shader count (and shader speed) is the main criterium of a GPU, followed by core gpu speed then followed by texture RAM speed (and size).

Seriously... Grab a 2nd hand 7770 over the 240.
At least you can run other games with it?

This is the bog standard 7770 versus a 240.

With my 6 years old HD 3780 I was able to run for example Assassins Creed BP on minimum in city! (Medium/High in sea) I'm quite sure it will still be an improvment over 3780. Playing on such a low end gpu nowadays learned me to play game for a story/fun , not being a graphics whore (well I would be, but you know :D) I looked in a youtube for gameplay with 240, some good games run smoothly on max, and I can always lower those settings. :7

Am I getting RNG on the forum or something?
Did you read the numbers above?  :teethhappy:
