Hello everyone

This is a poll to find out what tank series you consider to be the best in terms of firepower, protection and mobility.  Please post your choice and explain based on the before mentioned criteria why you consider it the best. Thank you very much !

The poll is nonsense, since for example a Leopard2A5 is much closer to an M1A2 in terms of overall performance than it is to a vanilla Leopard2 (A0).

What i want to say is that there is less difference in tanks from different families but similar generational upgrade level, than there is difference between generational upgrade leaps within the same tank line. Note that some of the lines (like Leo2 or M1) span well over 30 years of active service and upgrade history!

So, you certainly have e.g.

Leopard2A0 < M1A2 < Leopard2A7

I voted for Leclerc because I'm French .

But I think it's impossible to say which MBT is the best because some never fought, or it's actually very hard to find any valuable informations about those... Or I'm doing it wrong.

Its interesting to the majority voted for tanks (Leopard 2 and Challenger 2) that arent any better than their competitors/counterparts. The Leopard 2 ( any variant) will not enjoy superiority over tanks such as the Leclerc XXI  , K2 , Abrams M1A2 SEP, etc.  like the Tiger and Panther tanks did over tanks such as the M4 Sherman or T-34 during World War 2.   What kind of advantages does the Leopard 2 series have over its competitors ?  What kind of advantages does the Challenger 2 have over its competitors ?  None that are significant. Other tanks outdo them in one category or another.

My answer might have been a tad biased, my profile pic says it all

I have voted, in a direction you might expect.

However, as an analyst, there is no such thing as a 'best' MBT. There is only the best MBT for a particular countries armed forces, with a particular set of supporting arms, a particular doctrine, a particular set of conflicts that are likely, at a particular point in history and, in the last analysis, in a particular real conflict. Issues such as industrial base, finances, operational independence (its a bit embarrassing if your tank is 'No Go' because you rely on spares from a country that disproves of what you want to use your tanks for) and things like National Infrastructure of your own country (want to know why British tanks were smaller than everyone else in World War Two – look at our Railways) and the nation you expect to or are fighting in.

Take a basic design decision like where to put the engine. Merkava has it in front because the Israelis have limited manpower and believe in preserving crews, even at the expense of a stopped tank. Most other designers put it at the rear as they believe avoiding a Mobility Kill indirectly saves lives and preserves the tactical utility of the vehicle. Which is 'best' - it depends on a combination of the many of the issues I have mentioned above.

How do countries decide? Well, in most of the more advanced nations do lots of studies, including Combat Modelling at the Tactical, Operational and Strategic level (this is what I do for a living). Then the issues revealed are then thrashed out by the High Priced Help who make the final decision.
