I am an idiot.

I actually like people to get paid for the job they are doing and that I enjoy.

Usual answer I expect: blah blah blah evil corporations, blah blah blah overcharge for shitty products, blah blah blah controlling market, blah blah blah reaction against capitalism, blah blah resistance etc.

I say bollocks. It's stealing fair and square. Want free stuff? Go play in the park.

So for me no boot, no nothing, just plain ol'stealing, wearing a reactionary anti-systemic cloak to justify a shitty action which deprives people of their pay. Good riddance!

Oh and before people start ganging up on me, I am on the "poor" side and still pay for what I think is worth it instead of stealing it.

I am open to any argument that might convince me i am wrong.

Yep, it's stealing and criminal, no 2 ways about it.

You want to listen to a song? Pay the 99p you cheapo.

You want to play a game? Pay the £30 you cheapo.

You want to watch a film? Rent it for £3.50 you cheapo, or for a better experience go the cinema, see it in full big screen / audio glory and pay the £5 you cheapo.

You want to edit some photos? Get cheap / free packages online like Paint.Net you cheapo. You really need all the Adobe bells and whistles? Really? Then cough up.

Try reading 1984.  You'll find there are bigger issues than making it harder for you to steal software.

I'm all for paying for a product or service.

But I believe Piratebay and similar sites put some well needed pressure on the big companies and force them to rethink their strategies and adapt to the customers.

Not saying its all "thanks" to illegal downloading, just a welcome side effect.

Some companies may in fact survive and develop on a measly 5 billion dollar in profits, instead of the expected 10 billion dollar in profit.

In the end the customer benefits.

Evolution.

Edit: I would not have pursuited a career into digital design if it were not for the fact that I could download the needed software illegally.

Later on I got a job in the field and bought the software I needed.

I'm not affected by this since i am using other torrent sites. But don't worry, they will be back soon.

Most people don't have a 2000 euro salary to take a bath in them. In my country the average salary is 300 euros. Good luck managing to survive with that amount of cash and still have some left to spend, which most likely won't go into some pixels.

You're not stealing anything. It's unlicensed copying. For something to be stolen, it has to be gone from the original owner.

And that the copyright law is a mess like it is - that is nothing new. Realy wait 70 years after the death of the author to get access to a work that no one is selling any more? Pay ridicolous prices for things that have been published on free TV for 15 years just because the sales are that low? That needs to change.

What I do realize is that producing these things costs money and that someone needs to pay for that. The concept of sharing things that can be shared without additional costs is however just human. People always shared thoughts.

I'm all for kickstarters and then distributing the result for free. Imho no one has the license to print money by simply copying something that is well known all the time - even if he initially came up with that. A fair exchange is what is needed and what lacks on the side of consumers and authors - and not some shareholders of some production company.

So much for my thoughts about copyright and how an utopia could be.

Now for piratebay, what is the main reason for people to use it? It's simple, and people are lazy. The one simple solution for all those distributors out there would be: Make a platform where you can download all stuff easily and people will use it - and you earn with each download since they will pay for it, because it is simple and people are still lazy.

It works very well for games - just look at platforms like steam. Why bother downloading a game probably riddled with malware by the cracker when you can buy it easily an lazy on steam.

The issue is - and never was - if something is allowed. That something is forbidden never kept anyone from doing something. The issue for the industry is give people an alternative that is so simple that they simply won't bother using piratebay etc. and be done with it.

Just for future reference, TPB is hibernating atm, any sites framing as TPB are scams.

If you use public trackers then shame on you.

discussing piracy isnt allowed on these forums.

Solution to piracy is actually very simple. Stop selling products. Start selling services.

The game we all play is an example.

Being a metalmusician myself, I must say that our album sales of our last album (released 2010) have dropped to 35% compared to the older albums (around 3000 each) even though the last album is often considered to be our best. And for some reason our likes on Facebook have multiplied several times during the last years and we have 4x more 'likes' than sales.

And nowadays it's impossible to get a proper record deal, so I am not complaining about the end of the pirate bay.

In the past I downloaded a lot of things too, but since 5 years I've either bought the cd/software/movie I wanted or skipped it. Don't have the time for everything anyway.

I don't think most people are aware of that fact.
