I was wondering how much it would cost/afford it would take to build a simple and very light weight tank. (1-5 ton)

(Short note: I am just curious)

It depends what kind of steel you want to use.

Step 1: acquire car (second hand will do): €500-€1000

Step 2: acquire a lot of boxes (local supermarket): free

Step 3: acquire rifle (you might have to move to America to get a machine gun): €50k+-

Step 4: build something that looks like a tank: free

I'd reckon it around €51.000. Success not guaranteed.

Hey, at least the result is nice:

Spoiler

(P.S. don't blame me if things don't work out, it's just an idea.)

I used to talk to a guy in the US. He and two of his mates built a tank for paintballing. It cast them about $35,000. That included the digger they started with. I also helped convert an ArgoCat into a APC for airsoft some years back. We spent just over £2,000 on fixing the thing up and it was fun but a death trap. The US army spent over $14.7 billion developing the Bradley Fighting Vehicle and ended up with something no one wanted and didn't work properly. Little Willy cost less than £6,000 to make and fully test.

So the answer to the question would be; depends on what you want to spend.

Wouldn't building something like the Renault ft m1917 with small improvements be much cheaper?

I would get a old digger remove its  cabin put a turret on the, find some where selling 8 by 4  5mm steel plate, just use steel box for the structure of the hull and turret, for the gun scaffolding tube your not going  to fire it anyway. or steel drain pipe.

Building a tankette?

I think the steel part and perhaps the engine would be rather cheap.

You could get the engine out of a small car or something like that.

As far as I know the way the wheel of the track and the car is moving is rather similar.

You could need some mechanical engineering magic to make it turn like tank of course.

I think the hardest part would be the tracks and the suspension.

You could try to salvage an old bulldozer but that would be way too big and it would bring the costs up.
