The new tier 8 Russian premium medium tank T-54 First Prototype was unlocked for testing on the 9.7 test server and will be released with 9.7 or soon thereafter and with it brings another heavily armored tier 8 medium tank to the picture.  With the T-54 chassis the T-54 First Prototype will play very similar to the Type 59 due to the armor scheme and sluggishness of it.  The T-54 First Prototype has excellent protection on its frontal hull and also the turret armor is fairly tough for a tier 8 medium(but not as strong as a regular T-54).

This weak spot guide will breakdown the T-54 First Prototype into sections based on the weakest areas(green), the strongest areas of armor(red), and armor that can still be penetrated by most tanks but are not always easy to penetrate with lower tier tanks(yellow).  Purple areas are places where there is no hull armor behind to cause HP damage or an area that could cause a zero damage critical hit.

What does everyone think about another Type 59-esque premium 8 medium tank being released?  The T-54 First Prototype doesn't look like it will be getting special matchmaking so it will see tier 10 tanks and with its lackluster gun that works well against tier 8 and poorly armored tier 9's it could be in for some trouble despite its great armor.

Are they really going to try and compare this POS to the type 59, they already tried that with the 34-3, it didn't work out well for them.

Nobody from Wargaming has compared T-54 Prot. to Type yet to my knowledge, and even if they did it's a valid comparison. The tanks do show a lot of similarities; comparable armour, comparable firepower and comparable mobility.

Just out of curiousity but does anyone know of an in-depth comparison between the type 59 and this T-54 prototype ?

well, the type has more similarities to the t54p than the 34-3.

-both type and t-54 have decent front armor(altrough type is better), unlike the t-34-3.

-both have a 100 mm, altrough type gun stats arent great at least they are better than the 122mm.

-type and t54 have 5º gundep, way more playable than the antiair gun of the 34-3

-type agility isnt great, t54p is worse.

but what really kills the t54p is the full mm, even as a bad clone of a t59 it could be fun with limited mm, but full mm with mediocre mobility and 175 pen isnt worth.

This tank will be bad. 175mm pen on a rather sluggish medium seeing tier 10's means this tank will require huge amounts of gold ammo to be effective. With 175mm pen even your chances to pen an IS-3 in the front are already quiet bad. E-100 and IS-7 you can not even pen in their sides! I really don't see this tank making decent credits. It might be decent as a crew trainer/WN8 farmer running full APCR, yet as money maker it will be nearly useless.

I.m going on what the OP states which clearly says similar to the type 59, after having played over 100 battles on a mates type 59 and playing this in the test server then I can tell you it's not even close. Mobility isn't great on the type but it's manageable but on the 54 prot its terrible. Gun isn't isn't the same they gave it the T7 with less pen so the only thing is the decent armour, that is negated in t9 and 10 so back to square 1.

With limited MM which this should clearly have it may work, with mostly T9 and 10 battles like any other T8 it certainly wont, except of course in the blunicum and above hands.

Sadly people are so desperate for a soviet T8 medium they will buy it, shame they don't just make a stand.

still better than Matilda IV... will buy on discount, I thought T-34-85M was just too expensive for the specs it had.

The full MM and lack of mobility kinda bumps it off for me, would be better off playing a fully upgraded T-44. But then, you'll need to retrain your crew and won't have any extra credit income on it. Had only 2 games with it on Test Server, couldn't stand it and would only buy it for 100 golds (as in Test Server now). Better off training them boys/ girls in the Tier X ones + farming credit with something else.

Your post was implying that WG was making a comparison, not an unrelated and objective reviewer. Because I have no idea what 'they already tried that with the 34-3, it didn't work out well for them' would mean otherwise.

Anyway, you're wrong. The mobility of T-54 Prot isn't that much worse than a Type, I base this on reviewing the stats and comparing Testserver play to my T-34-3 which has the same mobility stats as a Type but weights 1t less. Never said the guns were the same, just comparable. Although they /are/ similar to the point where they're almost the same; yes, Type has 6m pen more but T-54 Prot has better accuracy, aimtime and RoF.

If anything, Type 59 never should have had limited MM. Objectively seen, it's obviously one of the best tier 8 mediums. T-34-3 with it's reduced armour, lack of depression and derpy gun needs it, Type doesn't.

By the way, introducing more tanks with normal MM and removing ones with limited MM is actually what will solve the issue of seeing too many tier 9/10 matches, because the tier 8 matches won't get hogged as much anymore.

No chance, never in a million years is it comparable to the type 59 or 34-3 mobility wise, your dreaming. Hit a slight incline and it crawls at 18kmh, it's more like the SP.

No chance that you're right, you mean, if you think the Type and T-34-3 go uphill much faster. I just went into a training room and drove my T-34-3 up the hill in Prohk... at 18km/h.

T-54p have full 120mm front, same as T9 T-54 which is pretty good at tier 8. Turret can bounce, but its not as reliable as in Type 59

D10T in T-54p have bit better reload, aim time and accuracy, but worse dispersion on the move... Though as tank itself is slower, it evens out I guess

T-54p have -6, Type 59 have -7 gun depression

And no upcoming prem will have limited MM, so deal with it.
