What is Raspberry Pi?

The Raspberry Pi is a series of credit card-sized single-board computers developed in the UK by the Raspberry Pi Foundation with the intention of promoting the teaching of basic computer science in schools.

The Foundation provides Debian and Arch Linux ARM distributions for download. Tools are available for Python as the main programming language, with support for BBC BASIC (via the RISC OS image or the Brandy Basic clone for Linux), C, C++, Java, Perl and Ruby.

Operating systems

The Raspberry Pi primarily uses Linux-kernel-based operating systems.

It is not possible to run Windows on the original Raspberry Pi, though the new Raspberry Pi 2 will be able to run Windows 10.

The install manager for the Raspberry Pi is NOOBS. The operating systems included with NOOBS are:

- RASPBIAN (Debian Wheezy)
- SNAPPY UBUNTU CORE (Snappy Ubuntu Core for Developers)
- OPENELEC (Open Embedded Linux Entertainment Centre)
- OSMC (Open Source Media Centre)
- PIDORA (Fedora Remix)
- RISC OS (A non-Linux distribution)
- ARCH LINUX ARM (Advanced users)

Anyone else have RPi? And what have you done with it?

I just bought RPi 2 about two weeks ago, and I'm still thinking some usage for it. I've tested it on basic Raspbian distro, but nothing much else.

Much cheaper than Windows platforms, but still you have to spend money for extra accessories you don't have.

Let's see.

I have one that functions as a router

Another one as a network package interceptor

Third one is a media center for streaming network content over multicast.
