Felt like making one of these again. Why not about my favorite tier 9 medium tank, the T-54?

Picture

Research

You can acquire the T-54 in three ways. Though it's required to unlock the T-34 first, from there off the three ways start.

Eventually you'll need to reach either the Object 416, T-54 Lightweight or T-44.

Although I'd base it on which one you like the most, the T-54 costs 142.000 xp via the T-44, 150.500 xp via the Object 416 and 192.000 xp via the T-54 L.

First drawback of the T-54: stock grind. Without the use of free experience, be ready to throw some APCR ammo at it. If you went via the Object 416 or T-54 L you will not have the second gun (100 mm LB-1) unlocked. You will stick with the 100 mm D-10T and you will have to wait for a gun, turret and another gun before it gets good, which is around 90.000 xp.

For the rest you can have the radio from all three tanks and the engine only from the T-54 L. You will not need the tracks in order to fit every module.

The T-54 leads to the T-62A and Object 140. Not to the Object 430.

Stats

Mobility

Horsepower per ton ratio

Weighing 35,3 t with my setup and being powered by a 700 BHP engine, the power to weight ratio of 19,81 makes the T-54 pretty mobile.

Topspeed

The top speed is 56 km/h. This is low(er) for tier 9 mediums, but the T-54 has more than enough speed and other advantages to overcome this limit.

Traverse (tank/turret)

48/44. This tank will not feel sluggish when turning, and it works pretty well for circling. There's no delay in the turret, it turns very fast.

Armor

Hit points

With 1650 HP, the T-54 blends in with 25 points under the average of tier 9 mediums. It's no E 50 or T54E1 with 1750 but you will be resistant to a few hits.

Thickness (f/s/r)

120/80/45 on paper doesn't sound as that much. But thanks to the angling of the front glacis, the T-54 has an effectively 200 mm+ frontal plate on upper and lower glacis. Angle that and bouncing 250 mm pen guns is possible as well. The front protection of the T-54 is a strong point. The side and rear, not so much, though it's a decent sidescraper. Be careful with a flat side or rear, it's likely to damage a module.

Thickness turret (f/s/r)

200/160/65, which also sounds a bit meh, but there is no flat surface on it. Practically the T-54 is impenetrable by any standard shell in-game. But, be careful with the top cupola's, if they hit that it'll penetrate.

View

View Range

The view range of 390 m is more than decent. Although this is the tier where view ranges get real (almost all have 400 m), the difference is minor.

Signal Range

730 m, which is the same as mentioned above. It's at the lower end but the difference is small.

Gun

The T-54 doesn't have a best gun unless you decide yourself. It has two top tier guns that are almost the same, but not quite.

On the left we see the stats of the 100 mm D-54 that leads to the T-62A and on the right the 100 mm D-10T2C that leads to the Object 140.

Rate of Fire in rds/m

7,32 | 7,69 / 8,19 | 7,80 s

The D-10T2C reloads faster, though the difference is noticeable but not very.

Average penetration in mm (AP / HEAT / HE)

219 / 330 / 50 | 201 / 330 / 50

This is a drawback for the D-10T2C: 219 pen is the lowest value compared to other tier 9 mediums, and the D-10T2C has even less.

201 penetration is good for weakspots though, and if it doesn't, the HEAT has enough pen to blast away literally everything.

Average damage in HP (AP-HEAT / HE) + Damage Per Minute

320 / 50 | 320 / 50

These are exactly the same values. Combine this with the reload and the D-54 has the lowest DPM, 2342 vs 2461.

Accuracy in dis./100m and aiming time in s

0,39 / 2,9 | 0,35 / 2,3

The D-10T2C definitely takes the points here. The accuracy on the D-54 is pretty poor, and doesn't really overcome the minor penetration difference.

Own experience + setup

Normal things apply: this is how I experience the tank at my fun, my doing and how I like it. Your own opinion may vary.

Gun

I use the 100 mm D-10T2C because the pen is not that awful and if it is I invest in HEAT. It's more accurate and it reloads faster than the D-54.

Ammo

38 AP / 9 HEAT / 3 HE. The T-54 carries 50 shells, of which only a few are gold at mine. I don't need more. The HEAT is more of an emergency, but even for an emergency it's pretty expensive.

Consumables

Small repair kit, small first aid kit and small fire extinguisher. It doesn't need a big one but it does catch fire so you don't want rations in case you do.

Equipment

Gun rammer and Vents. Other options: Vertical Stabilisers or Coated Optics.

Crew

Commander: Brothers in Arms | Sixth Sense | Eagle Eye | Repairs (repairs can be replaced by camo)

Gunner: Brothers in Arms | Snapshot | Deadeye | Repairs

Driver: Brothers in Arms | Smooth Ride | Off-Road Driving | Repairs

Loader: Brothers in Arms | Safe Stowage | Adrenaline Kick | Repairs

As I said, you can have another vision on the crew skills. Thanks for adding though.

Replay section added.

You miss nearly half the gameplay if you don't add camouflage skill on a russian medium.

It lives and breathes with camo. Get BIA as a 3rd skill, not as first. And no vStab, seriously??

Also always use an AFE instead of the regular one, because of the reduced % chance of fire. Or swap it with food if you have the credits.

Oh and for giggles check out Stefan_Xd's gameplay in the T-54.. If you dont mind a bit of HEAT
