Dude that ship is way older than the typical pirate ships. That's a galley from classical era. At least have a decency to find an age-appropriate pic, like this:

No pirates in the classical era? A certain Caesar, I. might have disagreed with you on that count. :-)

I think the original picture posted by Egregorian is actually (roughly) an 18th century Mediterranean galley as used by the Barbary Pirates (who were total scum for many centuries until the Brit's increasing presence in the Med 19th century stopped them. I think maybe even Nelson or Cochrane captured one or two as prizes). In fact the brand new United States of America were originally determined to be pacifists and wanted to actively avoid projecting power abroad, so they decided to have no Navy. Then they lost a load of merchant ships to Barbary pirates in Med (cuz they no longer had the protection of the Royal Navy), crews were taken hostage, forced America to start their Navy with some (maybe 6th rate) frigates. That was like end 1780's or 90's. You're right that the ancients invented Galleys, but they were such a fantastic design and perfect on the Med they served a purpose until steam replaced their ability against the wind mid 19th Century.

On topic, drama's... But I have to say it seems strange that that flag & name should 'belong' to any person or group in WOT's and die away as they move on, it's one of the most famous & classically counter-culture flags in existence. I hope & I'm sure the clan will either keeping going or be restarted again, it's bigger than a group of unicoms, even bigger than their ego's :-)

Edit - link below interesting stuff, apparently Galleys were a big deal on the Baltic Sea too into 18th century:

Yep, no happy-go-lucky Johnny Depp for poor old Caesar. Just capture and a ransom.

Edit:

Galleys remained an effective force all the while sail power was the primary method of hauling cargo by sea  - the ability to move at speed with the wind against you (or no wind at all) was a great advantage, as were the large crews. The disadvantage was that you couldn't take a volley of cannon fire or stray far from the coast.

There have always been pirates, and there still are, but the notorious Jolly Roger flag that was also the emblem of the PTS clan comes from a later era.

No it is certainly not. The shape of the bow is definitely from a classical era although I cannot name the actual culture it comes from. Other telltale features are the shape and position of the ram, and that it only has one mast with lateen sail. 16th - 18th century Galleys still had lateen sails, but they had two to three masts.

I am not an expert to many things, but I dare you to challenge me on matters related to sailing ships. I've been interested in them since the release of Sid Meier's Pirates! game and that came out in 1987. :B

Even my own image is not quite appropriate because it features a ship from the 16th Century rather than the golden age of piracy, the 17th Century, but that was the best I could find.

Jack Rackham? Why not Edward Teach?

Edit: ah, the flag of course. Silly me. Blackbeard was a friggin' hipster what came to pirate flags.

John Rackham. his joly roger was the skull and swords as opposed to the more popular skull and bones.

Nah PTS was dead since the last time. A zombie can't live long. No offence to all those players, but old PTS was feared even by players like me - a pub scrub who had only faint idea about CW. The later one was just a logo.

screw it..I am going for it, will follow my Original  plan..I honestly believe PTS will rise again.

I Always respected and "feared" PTS and lets be honest, a lot of top clans from the old days have to get back on there feet again..but that does not mean a flag or symbol stands for nothing..9 out of 10 times...you are still  better of driving the other way.

Previous messages reminded me of the song "Calico Jack" by Running Wild about that old chap.

P.S. Was there an Anne Bonny in PTS by any chance?

P.S.2 Black Bart FTW!!!
