Today 75 years ago 22 june 1941 we are on the start of "Operation Barbarossa"

Adolf Hitler plans to invade the Sovjet Empire, against the advice of his Generals to start a 2 front war.

It will end badly for the Germans

It went so badly wrong (and deceptively well for the German's at first, leading to it going even more wrong later) because the invasion of Russia should have started in March / April rather than late June. That was the plan, that was the intelligence Stalin had. But then crazy Mussolini attacked Greece and failed, giving Great Britain the excuse to occupy Greece, which threatened the 3rd Reich's Southern Border, so Hitler had to delay Barbarossa to drive the Brit's out of Greece. By the time they were ready to get on with it, it was June & too late in the year for them to achieve their necessary objectives and finish the War quick. So it dragged into Autumn (rains) then Winter (worst on record, only next yr when Stalingrad was happening was more severe Winter) which wrecked the German forces so much, they were bound to slowly lose from that point. But it seemed otherwise to the Germans, cuz the Ruskies had been so poor at beginning of invasion, they assumed they'd never be anything but a walk over. But they were only so poor cuz Stalin went a bit crazy due to his original intelligence being wrong. Thinking it would be March / April, then it wasn't, he assumed all intelligence was rubbish, stopped trusting everyone, and the real reality didn't then catch up with him till mid July / August, giving the Germans a big head start (but still too late in the year for it to deliver anything ultimately meaningful).

edit - German General's opinions - Guderian reckoned they lost WW2 by starting invasion of Russia late, then diverting forces from Army Group Centre aiming straight for Moscow South to surround Kiev, wasting even more time, making the Russian Autumn & Winter their enemy, one they could never beat. Manstein though reckoned the German's lost WW2 when they failed to push on & annihilate the Brits at Dunkirk, in his opinion everything after that was a forgone conclusion & a waste of time. In reality though, the German's never had any realistic hope of winning WW2 once Britain involved, they didn't have enough of a Navy, and what they had was wrecked in the campaign for Norway).
