Interstellar (2014, Christoper Nolan)
- yep, hard science
I REALLY wanted to like Interstellar, and after hearing that Kip Thorne was an adviser I expected the 'science' to be exceptional.
Then I saw it and was disappointed, especially in Prof. Thorne.

The 'matrix' thing inside the Black Hole notwithstanding... (poetic licence can be excused in areas where real hard science is incomplete)
... I'm afraid I cannot forgive the errors regarding time dilation and the gravitational effects caused outside the black hole.
The principle was right, but the effect was GROSSLY exaggerated.
To cause time dilation to the extremes in the movie, the planet would need to be so close to the black hole that it would have been torn apart.
And even if you can forgive that howler, and suspend belief to allow a solid planet in a stable orbit... a planet that close to such a huge gravitational well, would HAVE TO be tidally locked - there would be no rotation relative to the BH, and so you would never get the huge tide that almost washes them away.
There would be a big difference in water depth between one side of the planet and the other (an enormous tidal bulge towards the BH), but it would NOT move relative to the surface of the planet. Ergo.. no tide to threaten to wash them away.
I'm sure Prof. Thorne would never make such mistakes, so can only assume he deliberately let it slide in order to drive the movie plot.
With someone like Thorne on the payroll, a plot could... and should, have been devised to fit the REAL physics.
Shame on you Kip.
** I'm a physics/astrophysics student, so I'm familiar with the science involved
Maybe I was being super-critical because it was hyped as 'accurate science', and then it wasn't... but that did spoil it for me.
Sorry - just MHO
Personal top 5 Sci-Fi movies...
1) Alien
Opening 'wake-up' scenes, and the landing... FANTASTIC!
Plus - any 4 from these:
Silent Running - Blade Runner - 2001 - Soylent Green - Close Encounters - Solaris
Oh - and I'm not usually a fan of Vin Diesel, but I did enjoy 'Pitch Black'
