500 pounds for a good laptop to use for autodesk software? He's an optimistic bugger, isn't he?

Minimum system requirements for Autodesk 2016 if you're going to work with 3d modeling:

Block Quote

Additional Requirements for Large Datasets, Point Clouds, and 3D Modeling

Memory
8 GB RAM or greater

Disk Space
6 GB free hard disk available, not including installation requirements

Display Card
1600x1050 or greater True Color video display adapter; 128 MB VRAM or greater; Pixel Shader 3.0 or greater; Direct3D®-capable workstation class graphics card.

Note:
64-bit Operating Systems are recommended if you are working with Large Datasets, Point Clouds and 3D Modeling.

Get yourself a laptop with an SSD of at least 256 GB (you want an SSD for software like AutoCAD), Intel i5/i7 (believe me, you want Intel on a laptop, if you don't want to be using it as a coffee heater), 8/16 GB of ram and preferably a stand alone graphics card.

Within 500 pounds... good luck and have fun

Well you might find a 500 pound laptop for your needs on some clearance sale or as used but that't it. Anyway, good luck and i hope you find one :)

Autocad?

holy - I'd go for something in the 2k euros range.

you need lots of RAM, lots of single thread performance and a dedicated GPU with at least 2 GB ram

if you dont want to suffer.

in the 500 euros range you will find stuff that is suitable for office applications and a bit picture editing.

PS: my boss is also using autocad stuff and I built him a PC for ~ 3k euros -  and 16 GB Ram is not enough :)
