Used to think HE was a bit pointless until recently when light tanks became popular and fun again . Also watched a video where a unicum used a full HE load in a Lowe with great success and also our fellow forumite  Cobra just pointed out that the HE round on the M41 GF was good ( along with the RU251 IIRC)

So looked through my garage and have decided to think again about carrying more . Most or my tanks don't carry any .

I'd like to hear what you carry in your load out ,what tanks you use it in( apart from resetting cap ) and whether it really is worth sacrificing maybe an extra couple of premium shells for .

Ta :)

Some HE always.
Good for lights and some TDs and some tanks rear armour.

Don't take to much 2 HE shells are enough, you dont want to run out of standard ammo because you brought to many HE rounds in the battle which are useless agains the enemy you are facing at the moment.

You don't use HE very often but at the same time not having any HE might bite you in the @$$ sooner or later. Sometimes dealing a couple of points of damage against somebody in your own cap might save your battles.

Do you think HE is going to be more useful now people are playing more lights or does the slow velocity kill the idea?

Taking about HE velocity, just bought myself a G1R ( French PZ4 with a tumour) and those rounds sizzle. Almost like shooting AP and makes sniping a right laugh .

Edit...Its rubbish. I was drunk last night and though it was fantastic ...tank beer goggles. Can't play it at all today as it's cack.

Yip also good against all the thinly armoured TD's running around atm. the Grille line, most of the Swedes and FV4005 line (higher tiers) all worth poking with HE..(check your HE pen first ofc to make sure it's worthwhile.)

I always have some especially on the big guns. Pretty useful when you have very very very low HP tanks where an AP might bounce. I think i even killed a LT that was trying to run away with splash in one of my latest games.

My rule of thumb is 75mm + carry some. Smaller calibres, not much point.... but I am just a scrub so take such advice with a grain of salt.

Naah, I haven't changed my ammo loadout just because people are grinding LTs nowadays. You can't be too cocky with HE either. If you keep on switching to HE every time you see a lightly armoured tank you ask for a trouble. Switching to HE must be a tactical choice, not a very good choice when you're in danger of an instant dogfight and especially not good when you're bad at micromanaging your ammo use

I find HE too unreliable and use it pretty much only when shooting German paper TDs or I need to recap and chances of doing that using non explosive rounds are too slim. Except for tanks with high calibre guns which Ive never played too much

The HE rounds in the 122mm guns are handy. Nice high damage can make up for the mediocre penetration, especially useful when facing someone sidescraping.

Always have a few HE shells in any tank for the following reason:

When some heavy armoured tank is capping and giving you sh@t, shoot it in the tracks or turret with HE to reset the cap if you can't pen it normally.

Personally, I'd say that HE is pretty useless at calibres below 10cm.

At 10cm (100mm, 105mm, 107mm) I'd say they're mediocre.

At 12cm they start becoming useful.

And at 15cm they're finally starting to become half decent.

I remember a match I had to carry on the Chaffee. Lost all ammo, including APCR and the last shots weren't going through the front of an JgPz IV with low hp. Those HE shells helped securing Top Gun.

basically there are 2 situations HE could shine

1. if HE is able to pen. and devliever its pain

2. on the other end of the scale fighting  hightier tanks you other guns would have quite alot of trouble with

still that would require some minimum damage treshold for the shells, a löwe trying to kill a maus with HE might not work out so well

a panther with 7,5 L100 might never work with HE  while Kv2 OI and most of the other jp heavies would be fine to go HE only
