How well do the lag compensation in this game work considering shells have a travel time? Is the collision of my shots based on where the enemy was for me or on the server when I shoot?

Everything is based on what the server thinks.

Though the server reticle is going to be way of with for example 500 ms ping.

I play with 60-100ms ping, and I've seen good players play with 200+ ms. There's no correction in game, so you have to correct yourself. As long as your ping is fairly stable and not really huge, it's not that difficult.

ping will limit your performance in this game for sure, i play at 110-130ms ping from canada.

The server reticle dances to a different tune. I switched to it a few weeks ago, but can't yet say which one is better.
