Wow... I have to say I am really dissapointed in the results.
I read on the site ”Lots of players have taken part in the competition, sending their ideas and drafts to Wargaming.net specialists. Unfortunately, many of them couldn't get to the top due to several reasons: some of them had no Porsche patterns, others lacked realism and could never be produced because of breaking the laws of physics, and the rest of them just didn't meet the requirements of the contest; but each submitted work that we have received was a real piece of art, regardless any its drawbacks.” - its a DESIGN - a concept. The way the contest was formulated is faulty!
”These are the questions you’ll need to answer when designing an ideal tank of your own. The only limit for your imagination is the vehicle you will design should use technologies available no later than December of 1945, contain design and/or details classical for Porsche and able to be either mass-produced or produced for certain purposes in limited quantity.”
I was expecting to have the least spectacular design of all. Instead I was out for pushing the limits of physics (wich was a german dogma at the time - 1939/45)
CONTEST NAME: Design your Porsche Vehicle
design [dɪˈzaɪn]
verb
1. to work out the structure or form of (something), as by making a sketch, outline, pattern, or plans
2. to plan and make (something) artistically or skilfully
My tank is situated in BOTH points... its a concept / a design... with plans elevations and axonometry with detailed points on it.
I dont see the word numerical statistics in the definition - wich are fairly important as said in contest rules, but not a DECISIVE FACTOR - since NONE of us know the indeph of building a tank - or perhaps this contest was for those that work in the military and know EXACTLY how this works.
I participated with this PROJECT and not even a mention of applause? I dont want to be rude but prize nr.7 & 8?!?!? Really?!?!?
This is my reason why this tank has these proportions and dynamics.
A superheavy tank with high maneuverability - the son of Maus superheavy tank and a future legend of german technology and warfare - inspired by Tiger I influence in 1943. A heavly armored platform that would yeald the mighty PaK 44 gun - reason why its tracks go outside the tanks hull/body and has an almost 5 meters wide span - stability was required to fire that big gun sideways.
Its hull is much smaller than that of Maus, even the turret (though on similar basis) is smaller and equipped with a stereoscopic rangefinder (the best technology available for shooting at long distances - the best aspect of PaK 44 gun).
Maus/Ares comparison (check out this link) Where it can be seen that it is much smaller than Maus tank - thus less wheight; a more powerful engine - thus increased mobility and having a much smaller profile.
For more details... check out this link and also these documents with specifications.
EDITED!!!
Ok... here it is! Indeed the mass of my tank is almost 2 times smaller than an actual calculation of armor statistics.
TURRET ARMOR
Turret mantlet:250mm 0.45 m3
Turret front: 250mm circular shape 0.9 m3
Turret side and rear: 200mm @ 35⁰ angle on side 1.13 m3 / 20⁰ angle on rear 0.64 m3
Turret top: 120mm 0.76 m3
Turret bottom: 60mm 0.7 m3
HULL ARMOR
Hull upper-front: 250mm @ 50⁰ angle 1.38 m3
Hull lower-front: 200mm @ 50⁰ angle 0.52 m3
Hull sides: 180mm @ 30⁰ angle 1.22 m3
Hull upper-rear: 150mm @ 45⁰ angle 0.52 m3
Hull lower-rear: 100mm @ 35⁰ angle 0.27 m3
Hull top-front: 120mm 2.45 m3
Hull top-rear: 80mm
Hull bottom: 120mm 1.98 m3
0.45 + 0.9 + 2(1.13 + 0.64 + 0.7 + 1.1 + 0.08 + 1.22) + 0.76 + 0.7 + 1.38 + 0.52 + 0.52 + 0.27 + 2.45 + 1.98 = 19.67m3
19.67x7850kg=155tons
The tank has a total of 155 tons of armor + 37 tons of tracks + 2 tons of engines + 3.5 tons cannon = 197.5 tons meaning doble the tonnage. Power/Wheight ratio = 7.5hp / ton - wich is less than Maus tank.
Indeed the armor is too tough... a 33% smaller armor values would make my intended Power/Wheight ratio possible. Or a 20% smaller armor values would give it a 30km/h Power/Wheight ratio possible.
WITH THIS I CONCLUDED MY TANKS PERFORMANCE! I still do belive it is a good mentionable design regardless the overrated armor values.
SO!
This will actually do for a under 140 tons with a Power/Wheight ratio of over 10bhp/ton with a maximum speed of arround 28 km/h.
TURRET ARMOR
Turret mantlet:180mm
Turret front: 220mm circular shape
Turret side and rear: 150mm @ 35⁰ angle on side / 20⁰ angle on rear
Turret top: 60mm
Turret bottom: 40mm
HULL ARMOR
Hull upper-front: 200mm @ 50⁰ angle
Hull lower-front: 180mm @ 50⁰ angle
Hull sides: 150mm @ 30⁰ angle
Hull upper-rear: 120mm @ 45⁰ angle
Hull lower-rear: 100mm @ 35⁰ angle
Hull top-front: 60mm

Just wow... How the hell did yours got out-staged by those Honor Mentions (no offence honor mention guys!).

Yay finally...
Next time they could atleast mention that they have some problems and announcing winners will be delayed.

#7 Posted 04 November 2011 - 10:13 PM
This is simply SCANDALOUS!! Gogoashe should have been the winner by far !!! What is this contest?!?!?
#8 Posted 04 November 2011 - 10:48 PM
Gogoashe great job, awesome project, I dont understand why it wasnt even mentioned while in fact it should win or be in top 3. Not sure if its ok with all contest rules but it should get some kind of REWARD. If that option was available I would transfer you 500 gold just to show how much I liked it.
ps. Its awesome but seriously overpowered, it had to be tier 11 or 12 if actually in game but man I would grind for it like madman

I don't know what your complaints are... the rules said it must look like a porsche tank (with all it's characteristical designs) and it must be poissible to build by 1945 technology. i.e. a "ratte" tank would have never been able to be built, thus wouldn't meet the requirements for this contest (not talkin bout you, your submission didn't look to be impossible)

dude, that design is awesome! shoulda gotten at least 3rd prize, better yet second or even on par with first
don't know how the heck this got out of the competition, especially because the development history is pretty detailed and it could have happened this way
edit: had a look at armor and must say - speed, weight, armour and engine power don't quite match up... 100 tons with more armour than maus? and 1500 hp should accelerate it to 50km/h max?
you gotta admit, it's a wee bit unrealistic, though some tweaking in the numbers and this would be the perfect entry...

I Second that! This is what we waited 2 months for! Gogoashe we just got ****ed over big time. My work on this "contest" I spend a lot of time on my work but I didn't see this coming. Next time ill draw something on a napkin put some fancy numbers beneath it call it Betsy the 3rd and post it for a mention. Though I doubt I will be entering a new tank for the next contest... I think... nah doesn't matter you guys don't care.
@Gogoashe: wanna start our own contest to design a tanks that look better than he bottom 3?
@Everyone: who joins gets a golden star from me!

VK 4991 (P) by CoreMaster101 and Ares by Gogoashe (despite being way OP) have been my favorite ones from the start and I expected them to get 1st and 2nd place, or even share the first prize
Instead, gold (mostly) went to people who either combined tanks already ingame, or modified announced ones (Stug E-100 anyone?)
Another great move WG, keep it up.

Lots of players have taken part in the competition, sending their ideas and drafts to Wargaming.net specialists. Unfortunately, many of them couldn't get to the top due to several reasons: some of them had no Porsche patterns, others lacked realism and could never be produced because of breaking the laws of physics, and the rest of them just didn't meet the requirements of the contest; but each submitted work that we have received was a real piece of art, regardless any its drawbacks.
Gogoashe's work is full of porshe's invention's. Then, what's the other reason for dumping it out of contest? That it broke laws of physics? I don't know, but maus seemed more bulky and heavier, but he existed and moved around. IX Ares maybe would be slow but I don't see any reason to say it couldn't be builded in prototype. After all - it would be prototype only anyway - like maus.
Only thing that might be wrong in this project is 120mm thick roof in every place, but it's just me.
This contest was a farce after seeing such work dumped out of contest and not even rewarded by symbolic named gratitude.

@Hajo360... I agree with your idea...
P.S. Even when designing an automobile... the final car MAY NOT BE AS it looks in the design phase... thats why its a design... it is a start/foundation on wich you make your project!
#15 Posted 05 November 2011 - 08:57 AM
@Gogoashe: +1 - you are a true winner for me. Honestly WG choices is very strange.

You can't really blame WG, the timeframe was too short to sift through ALL the entries. They would have to actually respect the playerbase to do that...
#18 Posted 05 November 2011 - 09:36 AM
I have to say, i'm fairly dissapointed with the results of this contest. I thought that there would be more ORIGINAl tanks, but most of them seem to be VK502 As with different turrets... Even the winner was one of those with a different turret!
I guess all you have to do in a 'design a tank' contest is slap a different turret on an existing tank, pump up the numbers a bit and stick a different letter on the end of the name, and hey presto! You've won!

I didn't expect to win anything... thanks WG
Congratulations to the winners.
I'm pretty surprised Gogoashe's design is not even metioned though. I thought it'll take the 1st place.
