I'm sure you've probably had the same issue at some point or maybe you haven't, you get set on fire, start mashing your key for the fire extinguisher and it doesn't work until the 5th or 6th press. Tinfoil hats on, is this on purpose to get people to use automatic or am I doing something wrong somehow?

There's an inbuilt period, can't remember how much now, for how long a tank must burn before they can be activated. It was put in place to stop mods that automatically activated them I believe.

That makes sense I guess, although a bit annoying for people like me with fast (panic) reaction times to that kind of thing.

Considering how rare they're used I only use the auto type and they have the added benefit of making you less likely to catch fire.

From Wiki

Block Quote

Manual Fire Extinguishers 3,000 credits
If the tank catches fire this consumable extinguishes it when activated by the respective button. Regardless of reaction time the tank will suffer at least one "tick" of fire damage.

Imagine, if they removed the cooldown of manual extinguishers? ;)

That'd be 24k credits every time I'm set on fire! Would be cheaper to get automatics...

You can of course remap the button to get a quicker reaction time.

It's only fair to allow a tank to burn for at least a second or two or else there would be very little point including tanks catching fire as a game inclusion at all.. personally I find it really surprising, positively surprising when I set a Japanese HT on fire and it just continues to burn and burn evidently with no fire extinguishers at all but I guess that's a trade some HT players make with their equipment layout and drop the extinguisher for an extra repair kit or food which I suppose makes sense given much more frequent potential to require an extra repair kit.

One thing I'd like to see changed, I was hit twice and set on fire twice lol! Typical eh? ok fine but I obviously didn't have a second fire extinguisher aboard however it was Erlenberg so I drove my flaming tank into the river beside me thinking this would naturally put out the fire.. it did not, WHY not? come on WG make the change!  :D

There is no reason to use manual fire extinguishers

I know right, I used to take 2 repair kits to repair 2 tracks!

20k is worth it, considering it reduces your chance to get lit.

Not to me, when I play premiums to grind credits I lose my will to live, feels like there's no real goal so I end up wtfing all over the place.

You have managed to set a Japanese HT to fire? Must be haxx, I doubt I have ever seen one losing a track.

You have to be careful here. The way the game mechanics work means that the auto FE only reduces the chances to getting lit from engine fires, not fuel tank fires.

My favourite tanks have auto extinguishers but the vast majority have manual.  I like the fact that I can decide not to use it when the situation is hopeless anyway.  Surrounded by enemies taking heavy fire or only a few hp left on the tank or getting roflstomped with no way to win.

How exactly is a term for a female dog an "inappropriate remark"?

Manual extinguishers are bastards.

"AAWW YES I SET THAT MAUS ON FIRE AND HE DIDN'T EXTINGUISH MUST BE FOOD HELLO THERE FREE DAM... Nope, manual extinguisher."

I always repair fuel tanks if hit reduces chance of fire, I think:)

Remember a whiles back buying some flat pack furniture, when you assemble you screw it together..  When I wrote an online review from company I bought from they wouldn't allow the word screw to be used:)
