Hi guys. I recently bought the IS-3. My clan requires that tank, so I had to start the tech three from KV-1S, using my new female crew.

I came from the soviet super heavy line, with T-150, KV-4, ST-I and IS-4 being in my garage. Very enjoyable tanks in my opinion.

The first impact with the IS-7 line wasn't good. I find KV-1S too fragile in comparison to KV-1, so I bought KV-85 asap.

I hated it too, because of -2.5° of dep, bad sidescrape ability and the 40mm plate in the midle of the hull front.

IS was a real pain too. Really bad gun stat, can't sidescrape and unagled upper plate being unable to stop same tier guns.

Finally I got the IS-3 but I still unalble to make his armour work. If I sidescrape, I obviously get penned on the frontal plate that get overangled. If I point to the enemy the peak, tier 8 and above can pen me too. The only viable solution seems to be hulldown, but It's difficoult with the very low dep the tank has.

So I would ask you, more experienced players, some advice to use this tank well. Than you all in advice. :)

I'm afraid you're screwed.
IS-3 is the hardest tank to play.

Reverse sidescrape if you can. Hide lower plate with wrecks, little dips, road bumps etc.

KV-1S with derp HEAT is one of the most fun T5 tanks there are.

You're trying to play it like a KV-4.  Don't do that.  Play it like a medium brawler.

Don't try to snipe with it.  Get in amongst the enemy.  That's certainly how your clan will want you to play it in clan battles.

One way to get "hull down" without gun depression being a problem is to face hug.  The other is to use cover (rubble piles, dead tanks).  It's not a ridge fighter.  It's power is pushing as a group.

Can you upload a replay or two to see how you play it? Just some average replays will do.

Embrace your inner Stalin, he will guide you trough the darkness.

You might need to sacrifice weak capitalist at the start of the game(best possible result would be ammo racking M60 but any Amerikansky pig will do), to invoke Stalin's mercy upon you.

Ask some of your friends with Defender to go 1v1 with you. A good IS3 player will come out on top. :deer:

With top gun go toe to toe and face hug, you'll be doing this mostly in teambattles anyway, top tier just get close and smash em, when not top use that mobility and pen to hit em from the side - city maps are your friend

If you are top tier in IS3 (hard to have these days) and if there are no Defenders and if it's a city map (even better for you, because city maps are natural territory for IS3), you just rush lower tier enemies (Don't do it against other IS3s or very armored targets) in their face and facehug them to death or if you don't like taking risks then just reverse sidescrape or peek a bo. If you are bottom tier, use other top tier heavies as meat shield and fire on enemy only when they are distracted, or go with meds and support their push.

It's a funny one the IS3 but as mentioned use piles of rock or dead tanks to hide your lower plate, then your armour is very good. Watch out for taller tanks being able to fire through the roof of your turret, experienced players know that weak spot.
Played well it's a monster but it's not actually the press w to win tank it used to be. It now has to deal with the powercrept premiums and the broken tier8 MM.
When you play it at a ridge, try to bait the shot from your enemy by getting him to shoot the turret, then go across and give him 390.
