I was just looking at the results of the game I had just played. First things first, I had a bad game. Fired five shots. Two hits which were bounces. Didn't penetrate anything, didn't do any damage. Received 6 hits, didn't block anything, didn't spot anything and no assisted damage. I traveled 0.96km. I stank in that game. OK, sh*t happens, no big deal. That's not the issue here.

I received 542 XP for it. I was driving the tier 9 British HT. Not yet fully upgraded; I have the 20pdr B barrel (the 2nd gun) and the 2nd engine. Still need the top gun and top engine.

Below me in the ranking is a Tortoise. He received 519 XP. That is less than me. He fired 2 shots, one of which penetrated and did 404 damage. He received 5 hits, 4 penetrations and 1 shot blocked by armor (490). He spotted 1 enemy vehicle and traveled 0.16km.

What I don't understand is why I have more XP than him. He did better than I did! He actually did damage. It might have been from someone else's spotting (don't know), but then it would still be more than me. What game mechanic makes me have slightly more XP than this Tortoise? It seems a bit unfair: he should be above me in the ranking.

Regards, C.

To more easily answer your questions with minimal speculation, post up screenshots of the battle results.

The slower your tank moves, the less XP you get.

Well without the actual results to look at it's impossible to say why, if possible upload the replay file to wotreplays and post a link here and we can look at both of your results in more detail.

probably you spotted and did your damage

The tortoise might have shot tanks spotted by others in that case the exp is divided.

But then again without a replay is just a guess.

I think some xp is awarded for surviving, if you did so?

Wargaming think the tortoise driver smells and have someone employed 24/7 specifically to nerf their payouts :)

Pure guess but perhaps you spotted things that other people destroyed giving you some credit for that maybe?  If you got the game go back and check your spotting numbers.

Remember, I played badly and undoubtedly made many mistakes. That's not what this is about :)

 This.

But we need the actual battle results to tell for sure*

*Or as far as possible, we don't actually know the XP formula

Edit: well, that's helpful...

No client screenshots?

Can't really help here if you didn't stay to the end to record results.

Yep you get a small flat bonus for that and he could also have gotten extra XP from these things:

Spotting an enemy tank for the first time

Inflicting critical (module/crew) damage (assuming the 2 shoots OP described as bounces instead were critical hits)

Neither of us survived. As far as I know none of my shots were critical hits. Oh, and in the replay don't look at the XP on the first screen, it was my first win of the day in this tank. Look at the XP values in the "team" tab.

Well he didn't survive (or he left early which is unlikely) though time of death could be a factor.

It was speculated that you get XP based on % of battle you are alive for.

I suppose it could also be some crit hit xp but that's only meant to be significant for lights vs higher tiers (supposedly) and if he blew tracks off no-one gave him assist damage (based on OPs claims)

In short... no idea.

Isn't there a small bonus for ''amount of time survived'' as well?

I looked at the replay and I don't think he did any critical damage or spott enemies for the first time and he didn't survive either. He left the battle as soon as he was dead so we got quite little do go on since we don't get the actual result screens for either him or the Tort, so yeah in short... no idea.

Yes, judging from experience there seems to me.

I have no particular examples, but I have had some games where I've tried to participate in combat but been more or less unsuccessful - yet still gotten a decent result for close to zero damage. Frankly the kind of stuff I like to see, being rewarded for bothering to try rather than camp in the base.

This is probably the best explanation we are going to find. I didn't realize that exiting the battle as soon as I was dead would cause the results not to show in the replay. And I didn't think I would need a replay when I exited.
