Probably 9 times out of 10 when I meet a 5A in battle, regardless of tier, he/she will only use HEAT rounds. I don't have one. Is the AP pen on that thing really so bad?

9 out 10 WZ-111 A5 I've seen goes the medium line, even in a 3x platoon. So I doubt they need the heat for it.

I suspect he means if he's in a tier 8/9. You may have read it differently.

When I was going to St Ives etc etc.

I thought it was a daft question so I deliberately read it as it was written just to be unhelpful.

My answer was as useless as the thread

Well, I have been playing tier 10 all afternoon. One thing is guaranteed, apart from usual friday afternoon teams of crapness, is if a 5A shoots are u - it's always a heat round....

I guess I should man up, and just fill all my tier 10 tanks with gold to be "competitive"....

As a dinger, shouldn't your tanks already be full of gold? :amazed:

Edit: typo

Most players with their "precious" tier X tanks spamming Premium ammo these days...

Well, I have scottish roots and don't believe in spending money when u don't need to. Of course, I use prem ammo when needed.

I never understood the principle behind loading full premium rounds in any tank, it's simply not necessary. In the case of HEAT, it can even work against you in a lot of situations, like tracking a target while dealing damage at the same time. While APCR doesn't have the same problem, the fact remains that it just is not necessary in so many situations.

That said, here are some things to consider, that go through my mind when loading premium rounds:

  1. I sometimes load the initial shell as premium APCR in say a Skorpion G, not for the higher penetration but because its shell velocity is vastly higher than the default AP shell. This makes hitting aggressive scouts or other fast moving targets heading for their initial position a lot easier.
  2. I do not give a damn about credits during a match. I play to win and get a good personal battle as well. And if firing premium rounds is whatever it takes in that certain situation to reach this goal, then that is not even a thing that I (or anyone) should consider not to do. As long as you make the premium rounds count by not missing or wasting them unnecessarily, you'll still likely make a profit if the battle was good enough.
  3. Fight fire with fire. If someone with at least some form of armor decides to unload full premium at me, I will return the favor. At least, if this is somewhat necessary where the brawl/duel is all about who trades shots the best. However, firing HEAT at say a HEAT-spamming batchat will just always be unnecessary.
  4. There is no point in just staring at a target because your default ammunition can't penetrate it. Say you're facing a hull-down E100, there is just no point in trying your luck by hitting the pixels of the range finder when your premium round gives you a near-guaranteed penetration straight through the turret. You also just do not have the time to endlessly duel with someone. Battles are dynamic and you need to put pressure on your enemy before they do the same to you. Of course, I'll swap back to AP whenever a clean shot in the LFP or sides is possible. However, I won't reload for this when my next shell is already chambered, so it can of course happen that I fire unnecessary premium rounds.
  5. When facing retard-armor, 'nuff said. Japanese heavies, Maus, Object 252U Defenders, or other overbuffed armor profiles just deserve to get spammed by HEAT, since many of these tanks lack actual weakspots (250-260mm armor is NOT a weakspot, WG) to be aimed at.
  6. When the next shot is crucial to penetrate. If the default ammunition will not give you a guaranteed penetration, but the premium round has much better odds, then this is something you should do. This can even be for the same reason as no.1, where you simply need the extra shell velocity (in the case of it being APCR).

I used to play 5a with lots of HEAT. Then I wanted to experiment playing AP only. My damage output dropped by about 200-500 per game.

The MOST frustrating thing was not beeing able to pen lower front plates or weak spots. I counted the penetration ratio especially of IS-7s LFPs:

16 shots on IS-7 lfps: 3 pens, 13 bounces no matter the distance. Now I'll start playing with more HEAT again. Not even talking about hulldown E-100s, Type 5s, Maus, Defenders....

HEAT is sometimes the only way to do damage or win a game. However some people just play full HEAT because you don't have to think NOR do you find yourself in a situation where you have to reload for 10 seconds before you can pen something.

True, but even more true is that 340>250 (the actual pen of the AP round for 5A).

OP, my guess is that it's either early game where the 5A might rush for a good position and then try to deter enemies by spamming heat, or the player is a muppet/wn8 warrior. :)

(damn that fine single vineyard Chilean Merlot)

I'm kinda disappointed now:(
