There is a limited amount of fuel aboard a tank and you can see it decreasing (especially if your fuel tanks get hit), but I cannot remember a single instance of actually running out of fuel. Has this ever happened to anyone? Did this feature ever exist in a previous patch?

If it's not actually part of the game mechanic, why is it even in the game?

Running out of fuel is not a feature of this game.

If your fuel tanks get hit and only turn yellow you got lucky. If they get hit the second time, they will set your tank on fire. Carry a fire extinguisher on your tank so you can avoid that.

The fuel tanks have nothing to do with actual fuel levels/consumption/risk of running out of fuel.  They are just a clumsy attempt at added yet more RNG to a game, filled to the brim with RNG.  Tank get's shot in fuel tank > chance to be set on fire.  That's it, really.

You can also repair it.   A certain popular live steamer once gave me (yes me directly) advice about this. I asked how he felt comfortable with no fire extinguisher because he always runs food consumables.  He said the trick was to immediately repair a damaged fuel tank.  Of course with our repair kits now on cooldown and available again after 90 seconds this is even more sound advice today than when he gave it me.

No he thought that the fuel tanks are actually filled with fuel and when they get damaged and turn yellow he thought you're running out of fuel!!!

Omg OP please be trolling don't tell me you're serious thinking that after 20k games!

If I am running without a fire extinguisher (one some tanks I do) I almost always repair my fuel tanks after they get damaged.

If you mean not running out of fuel count me in. My car is a gas guzzler.

Yet magically seem to have scrounged up some just before they're about to get mauled, mangled, and rebalanced back to garage. It would seem they have faulty GPS however, as it always seems to navigate them through water. The poor bastards...
