Got ST-I recently. Can't pen anything with stock gun. Not nearly enough free XP to skip to better guns. Yeah, heard it's a grindfest, but how to make it less of a grindfest and not be a total burden for the team?

Currently I'm playing with HE, finishing game with stats like 14 shots, 12 hits, 540dmg. That's still better than what I was doing with AP. Following heavies, bouncing some, drawing fire away from more useful team members, trying to damage modules, sidescraping in a way that's not guaranteed to bounce so that enemies still try to shoot me instead of people with better guns, but still not contributing nearly as much as a t9 heavy should.

How not to be tomato in stock ST-I?

Only way is to spam gold. It's made that way..

Use AP on soft targets, HE on thing you can't pen even with gold ammo.

You haven't played the IS3 line yet? If so, the 225mm pen from IS3 gun is enough for a LOT of tanks to pen. Play a support role, as your turret armor is not reliable yet.

Yep, and still rather far from IS-3. (currently slowly finishing A-43, so KV-13 and IS still along the way.)

I'd say the same as you play a stock T-54 or stock Centurion I. You play other tanks until you have enough free xp.

ST-1 has 3 guns, the second gun is unlocked by the IS-3 in the other line, you should get that gun at least before playing the ST-1. It's not the best option but it is at least a bit better than the first gun and has decent premium pen for the harder targets.

You dont play it stock, like anything else above T6. You wait until you have played yourself enough free xp from other tanks, so that you can unlock at least a few of the top modules. If you play high tier tanks stock you will not only make your own game a pain in the butt, but you will be completely useless to the team and thus not help the win.

Don't go to heavy side. Load 2/3 HE 1/3 AP and go to medium side. There you should find enemy soft enough to been penned by AP. If the target is too hard, load HE. As soon as you can, unlock the BL-9. Good luck, you will need it! :)

You do the smart thing and grind the BL-9 on the IS-3.

There's no point playing that D-25-T in tier IX, even with full prem the gun is just way too terrible to be of any use.

I solved the ST mystery by selling it after 53 games - I am awful in it.

Play it quick, so that it became nonstock asap

As other say: don't play it with the stock gun. If there is 1 thing I want at least on a new tank, it's a good gun (I prefer the top gun). You don't need to be fast yet. Usually I use Torsian Bars (depending on nation of course) if I need the tracks to mount a better gun. It's only 200k credits. Use free xp or unlock a gun like the IS3 has via other routes that maybe require less xp even.

Once you have a good gun, try to make time to grind with it, so you learn to adjust to the tank and the required playstyle. This will increase your win chance and also you will gain more xp.

I played it with the 175 mm pen gun :P wasn't that much of a hassle, I used HEAT vs. heavily armored tanks. Use AP for soft skinned targets. Didn't bother with HE... gun wasn't the problem for me, it was the stock turret which gets penned easily and the horrid mobility. Gun did the job fine, but as others have pointed out: go for medium lines until you're elited. Still got decent stats all things considered...

Free-xp the upgraded turret. Without it, the STI serves no purpose.

As others said, either grind BL-9 on IS3, play other tanks to earn enough free xp or play other good elited tanks with crew training off and then convert the xp to free xp. Playing any T9 tank stock is just a no go and you shouldnt even try. You are harming both yourself and your team. There are of course some which are managable somewhat like centurion 7/1, conqueror and others but you need to spam gold and even then it is pain in the [edited]. In general pretty much any T9 tank of any nation is a free xp sink (120k+) to actually become T9 tank and not T8 tier higher.

St-I is unplayable without the BL-9. You can spamm all the gold rounds you wish you are still fucked.

Mobility is rather poor, so by the time you get to the medium line to do something  the side is  either won or lost. If you go to medium line and enemy counterpart HT goes to HT line he farms everyone and game is lost.

Best advice, play some tank you really enjoy until you have enough free xp to unlock BL-9, and maybe try to get the daily doubles with the stock gun hoping for a team that can carry you.

Except D25T has APCR as premium. And it also as crappy pen. :P

You shouldn't play Tier 9 tanks as stock.

Unfortunately this is true... literally every single T9 tank is designed to be a free exp sink, just like with T7s and T8s I guess but it is far worse to play a stock T9 tank than any other tier.

Stop gimping yourself and load gold. There is no other way to make yourself "play better" in a stock T9 tank.
