Okay so I've been having some difficulty with this tank, i find the gun to be very temperamental and the penetration to be a real struggle with the current superheavy meta have you guys got any tips on how to play this vehicle?

HE + 152 is the way to go.

Can be a fun tank, at times.

Stick with it it may grow on you:)

If you're not using the 152mm derp with HE, you're an idiot. I'm sorry but you just are. It's a very fun TD with that gun and the 250mm pen cHEAT, though temperamental, can be a right laugh when you shave half of a Tiger I's HP off in one shot.

If you want to use the 122mm, go and get an SU-122-44.

The stock 152 mm is the way to go indeed, not only because it is more competitive in +1 and +2 MM, but it also teaches you the playstyle of the subsequent vehicles. Furthermore, as stated by others you should ditch the AP round and just load a combination of HE and HEAT. When 3-marking the vehicle, my ammunition loadout was 16/10/0 (HE/HEAT/AP) respectively. The HEAT round is absolutely filthy at this tier, and will turn the SU-152 into a true boomstick, much like the ISU-152 is famous for. However, it does need practice to use it, and if not aimed properly, tends to get absorbed by spaced armour, gun mantlets and tracks. Also, despite the terrible base accuracy value of 0.5, the key with this vehicle is to stay at range, preferably 200+ metres. The long reload and poor traverse speeds means that it struggles in close combat fights. Besides, the HE shell is absolutely devastating and only needs to hit the target anyway.

In terms of equipment, I personally run the vehicle with a Gun Rammer, GLD, Optics, since I deem that vents do not give too much. With a decent crew and the food consumable you can get the view range to around 400 metres, which although still mediocre, is still a lot better than the abyssmal 375 metres when using vents instead of optics.

OMG silly me, I didn't realize this has 250mm of HEAT pen, I thought it was the same derp gun as the KV-2 so its premium round penetration was mediocre at best. Thanks for the help guys!!

Remember: Nobody has ever struggled with SU-152. It's the other way around. It's always SU-152 that struggles with incompetence of its driver who doesn't know the true evil communistic capabilities of the mighty Stalin derp.

Think im on about 94% moe on the su and i've only ever used the derp. I keep 4 rounds of heat but rarely use them. There's nothing better than meeting a T29 frontally and sticking a HE shell straight throught the machine gun port on the upper plate :D

Have a semi good replay uploaded from an old patch if you want to see what it can do http://wotreplays.eu/site/3818855

You are using the wrong gun. The stock gun is the best gun. Have 5-10 heat shells + rest HE. Why? Because heat has 250pen for 750 alpha. You basically are an ISU152 A FULL TIER LOWER. Use heat when you are sure you will heat a weakspot and HE at long ranges and the tank will be glorious. FFS you need 2 heat pens to get better DPG than all of your tier7s except for the t29.

And when you think of what this thing did in a real war, you can't help but feel overwhelmed.

I'm also using a decent amount of AP on the 152mm gun. For tier 7 matches and low armored enemies thats a cheap and easy 700 dmg/shot

Edit: with lightly armored I of couse mean more armor than HE pennable...

This is the only tank I have for which I load all types of ammo. Don't use the HEAT often though, as I'm not used to it I tend to hit the tracks alot

Just as a side note, the cHEAT, and cHEAT in general is super temperamental. Sometimes it's best to just stick to HE rather than risking cHEAT being a b*tch and doing nothing to like a tier 5 because the tracks ate it. Sniping with the HE is pretty funny as even when you're bottom tier, nobody wants to get slapped with 152mm of HE.
