1st off, I am not cursing gold ammo, not asking for it to be nerfed and don't think people are wallet warriors for using it.

That being said, for the majority of my games I have avoided using gold ammo. I guess it's the Scotsman in me, but I hate paying for it.

With the X-mas events I recently started playing some tier VIII and XI matches where ( as has already been covered in depth in the forum) I have come across many situations where I can't penetrate the enemies in front of me.

Normally I try to relocate to get better angles on the enemy, or try to spot for my team.  Unfortunately relocation means you arent dealing damage during that time and spotting doesnt guarantee any damage.

Are you better off

- loading HE and annoying the enemy

- relocating despite the lack of contribution during the movement

- keep firing standard ammo to help the enemy get steel wall awards

- stop being a scrooge and fire gold (which in certain cases won't work anyway)

- other advice?

It depends on many factors, personally I enjoy playing medium tanks and some light tanks above all. I would take this rule of thumb, at the start of the match, you see the enemy list and you see what you can pen and what you can't.

If I am a heavy but bottom tier, I go with the mediums, odds are my "armor" and "alpha" can help collapse the enemy flank and this helps me end up on the flank or rear of the enemy heavies.

If I am mid-tier, I will be following our top tiers and once they start fighting I either go for track shots or flanking. This depends highly on the amount of TD's, Artie's and type of terrain. Your one tracking shot on that monster mouse might leave it vulnerable to high pen guns or blow one of their repair kits.

If I am top tier, then 90% I won't have problems.

While I do carry gold on all my tanks, I rarely use it. Sometimes it helps me take out some super heavy if he has some hp left or I need to farm damage. All tanks have weakspots, some are more hard then others you'll learn as you go along. If I where you I would stick to tier 6 and 7, I am not saying gameplay doesn't vary much but you fight O-I tanks, Tigers, IS's and KV's, it's good training and you still make money and getting your crews trained.

Just after battle ask yourself, what could I have done better and don't be afraid to fallback in battle, sometimes luring the enemy in for your td's and arties is the best thing you can do.

Yes.

The only times I have seen him fire premium ammo is with the tier 10 "poo"Barn.

Depends on the tank. I.E the Skorpion G basically prints money/damage every time you left click the mouse.  The Chrysler K requires you to press 2 before the battle starts if you want to deal any damage :P

Short answer = Yes!

Long answer is yes if you are smart about which tanks/tiers you play.

I did a zero gold 3 mark in the skorpion but I did use chocolate and bonds bonuses..

You can...if you are a top player...if you are an average to good player...without prammo you can go f yourself when you see a maus or type 5 w keying you down.

Shoot the tracks.

AngelOfAwe proved you could maintain Unicum stats as F2P with no premium ammo.

Some tanks are better than others though.

The latest XVM update boosted my F2P account by nearly 300 WN8. It's now superunicum!! Without me playing it for a few years!

Competitive yes, potent in every situation, perhaps not.

Overall you can get by very well with using nothing by standard ammunition, but in certain situations you would be better of switching to the premium ammo. As an example it's 2 tanks left alive, you in an M4A3E8 Sherman vs an VK 100.01 (P), you got 128 base pen, the VK got 170mm side turret armor and 140mm rear, side 130mm armor and 80mm rear. Sure you can if you're lucky make that work anyhow, but since you only do on average 115 damage per shoot you most likely need to be lucky awfully a lot while the VK just needs to hit you most likely once, in this situation I'd use the premium ammo to at least get 177mm pen.

The reason we see more and more premium being used is due to wrecked balance, removed weakspots and map design, combine those 3 and you greatly increase the need for premium ammunition, sadly that's just what the balance department have done during the last year or so.

Can you be consistantly competitive without gold?

On tier 1 to 5, yes.

From tier 6 to 10 no.

Very good players will still be pretty consistent but against overbuffed BS tanks like the Maus or Type5 that have more effective armour on their weakspots than same tier tanks have pen, there is very little choice unless you want to lose the match or lose out on damage.

Its probably a No!
The speed of game and tanks you meet prob means the need for silver is above F2P cred returns and unless you are in a prem or have prem account, for the average player means its hard to be more than average.

So there's no "dabbing of the 2 key"?

I'll have to take a look.

Well i guess my stats are the result of never shooting a single round of gold ammo at tier 6+ and the only time i fired some was with the churchill at tier 5 but that was for the t25 pilot.

doesnt helped that i never bothered to do well before 10k battles but oh well.

grinding tanks doesnt help though especially since im playing a lot of my amx m4 obj 430 2 (how i got to 66% win rate is beyond me wish my st-1 was similar or at least back up to 55% ;)

Yes, but it is becoming less and less so.

AngelofAwe old account was made during a completely different WOT meta and can't really be used anymore.
You have to remember that it was made before retard armour buffs everywhere and before removal of weakspots.

My best guess is OP needs to learn the basics better. Looking at his tank stats most of them have a subpar damage output. I have been playing WoT for quite a while now and the only tanks i use skill ammo for out of spite are japanese superheavies / or simlarly idiotproof tanks or when i run out of standard ammo and more or less rare cases where i don't have a choice. So OP should either stop shooting the wrong tanks or learn the weakness and strengths of ( preferably ) all the tanks in the game.

It's ok to use premium ammo when the situation calls for it.

Entirely depends on your understanding of "competitive" and "you".
I don't use gold since years and play mostly support-tanks, but I manage to stay over average even when I go afk a lot and do a lot of nonsense if a propper opportunity arises. That said, a good player who follows the meta a bit more will have no problems with performing well without premammo.

For me yes. I have played the T-54 and the obj 430 II which both got 201 pen at tier 9 and I got no problem penning people.

Sometimes i play on my "play for fun" account and i play 100% without gold and can still get some pretty decent dpgs(1500+) on tier 6 tho. Even in tier 8 games i can do good damage. Its about knowing what to do and using he when you cant pen... You would be surprised at how much you can do. I have also played without gold on the leopard and other tanks still held 3.8k or so... Its really not hard. You just have to play differently and its much harder to carry against super hts.
