Almost a year ago we got a first glimpse of the upcoming "frontline" game mode - an epic 30 vs. 30 battle mode that featured exceptionally large maps which had to be taken sector by sector by an attacking team, while the defending team had to stop them. It featured a respawn and repair system and even the ability to change tanks during the battle. Apparently development was outsourced to some Austrian (?) company by WG, but since the initial reveal, no news on the progress have surfaced, as far as I can tell So, what´s up with this mode? Is it still in development - and if so, when will we see more of it? Or was it canceled? That would be a real shame, I find the concept of this mode quite intriguing... more so than the standard grand battles we got since then, and certainly more than ranked mode, from which I stayed completely absent so far. And the development of this mode was seemingly quite advanced back then, it was fully playable and had a map ready to go. For the most part they only stated that credit gains had to be adjusted so it wasn´t going to be super unprofitable.

So... what´s up? Any news on this?

NO there was that testserver thingy - well sandbox - testing a 3X3 km map. THe mode with the right changes would have been fun thats for sure. But WG decided to discontinue them I guess in favor of Grand Battles.

... you didnt read my post at all or clicked on the link, did you? Either that or you´re being sarcastic.

No, these are two conceptually very different modes. Grand battles is just an upscaled regular battle; frontline features multiple zones that need to be conquered, respawns, repairs, tank changes, and NPC targets that need to be destroyed. The only thing it has in common with grand battles is that both are 30 vs 30.

As far as I can recall, both were in development at the same time. And its not like WG needs to prioritize one over the other, given that frontline was outsourced. They actually unveiled two grand battles maps roughly around the same time, one would later become Nebelburg, the other was called "grand canyon" and has yet to resurface again. What we got instead was Klondyke.

They had this GB dev video a few months back. It explained what happened to it. As GB is not done by WG, inc the maps. It's outsourced since they had HD maps and the core engine to work on. They tested a 3x3 km map mode first. But found several flaws with it vs mobility etc on tier X. And they knew about the future plans for new tanks and tier X swaps etc that we have seen recently and will see next patch. So with that in mind they tested it again by decreasing the map size by more then half. And it worked better. Thus the game mode you see today.

Cool! I completely missed that. That´s at least a sign of life. Thank you.

Though it´s kinda odd that it´s "too early to share details" when this article was published more than half a year after the mode could already be tested.

I loved the balance at the start. As soon as you were a General, you could do nothing with it and the game was basically over by that point.

I would love to see a gamemode in the 'Rush' type of Battlefield. Where everyone respawns when the objective has been taken. You get 3 lives and have to destroy/capture/escort certain objectives. I wonder how that would work out in this game.

Well, there is no guarantee that the version we tested back then is even close to what will be released on the live servers. "in 2018" could also mean Christmas 2018, a lot of time to screw things up. :izmena:
